Chapter 19

Chris stands up as he puts his shirt back on, his hair tousled.  He glances over at Jessie, who is sitting on the floor, her arms wrapped around her knees, staring at him.  "What?" he says.

"So now what, you go back to pretending I don't exist, even after what just happened?" Jessie asks.

"It was SEX, Jessie.  Nothing more, nothing less." Chris replies.  Jessie stands up.

"Sure, you keep telling yourself that.  Maybe you'll even believe it eventually."

"I've got more important things to worry about -- Boardman wants me in the ER, and I'm sure that being stuck in an elevator isn't on his list of acceptable excuses for being late."

"Yeah, well Bobbie wants me in the ER, too -- she supposedly paged me, but I never heard it.
Fortunately Eve did, and if I don't get there --"

"Wait a minute.  EVE sent you to the ER?" Chris asks.

"Yeah.  Why?"

"Reardon is the one who sent me to the ER, yapping about Boardman looking for me.  Eve knows our schedules -- she knows we'd both be on the same floor at the same time, and -- I think I smell a rat."

"You don't think Eve would deliberately --" Jessie begins.

"Absolutely." Chris replies.  He stares at Jessie.  "You're in on this, aren't you?"

"In on WHAT?  Chris, do you think I'd be pathetic enough to deliberately get stuck in an elevator with you?"

"Yeah, I do." Chris replies.

"You arrogant, egotistical -- I've got better things to do with my time than waste half of my  afternoon being stuck between floors with you and your enormous ego -- I'm surprised I even FIT in this elevator with you!" Jessie shouts.

"It was your plan all along, wasn't it?  You wanted to get me stuck in here with you and seduce me!"

"SEDUCE you???? You're the one who made the first move, you jackass!"

"Well, I didn't hear you complaining -- sounded like just the opposite to me." Chris remarks.

"I was faking." Jessie says.

"You LIE!"

"And here's another newsflash -- it's not the first time, either!  But it's DEFINITELY the last, that's
for sure!" Jessie says, just as the elevator starts moving.  The doors open, and Jessie walks off the
elevator in a huff.

"Hey Jess." Chris says.  Jessie turns around.  "Your shirt is on inside-out." he announces in front of the whole lobby.  Jessie gets a look of both disgust and embarrassment on her face, then ducks into the nearest closet and slams the door.  Chris grins devilishly as he walks away with a smug look on his face.

Ryan arrives at he and Greg's hideaway.  "Where's that idiot little brother of mine?" he asks, looking around in anger.  He takes the gag out of Kevin's mouth.

"Maybe he wised up and bolted on you." Kevin replies.

"Doesn't matter, I'll fill him in later.  Besides, I came here to talk to you, anyway.  I'm afraid there's
been a slight change in plans today -- you wife is just too damn nosy for her own good.  Then again, you already know that, but -- it's just too bad for her."

"What are you talking about?" Kevin asks.

"I tried, bro -- I tried to get her to lay off, but she wouldn't listen!" Ryan shouts.  "No, she's too
close to figuring everything out -- I can't take that risk."

"You lousy -- if you lay one hand on Lucy, I swear I'll --"

"The problem is, how do I do it?  I mean, it has to be something that won't implicate me in any way.  Of course, there's also the little problem of YOU, but -- that can be dealt with.  You and Lucy will be reuniting sooner than you think -- not in the way you'd hoped, I'm sure but -- well, you can't always get what you want, can you?"

"You are NOT gonna get away with this!" Kevin shouts.

"Can you imagine how devastated I'll be -- both my wife, and my brother, gone.  I'll be so distraught, I'll leave the country to start all over.  By the way, your cousin Jessie is a real gullible one.  I asked her for a couple hundred thou, to help me track down, my ‘poor, mentally unstable twin', and she just handed it to me on a silver platter.  What an idiot!" Ryan says.  "Well, I just thought I'd share my ‘good news' with you.  I have to get going -- I've got some travel plans to make."  Ryan puts the gag back in Kevin's mouth.  "As your soon-to-be late wife would say --
TA!" Ryan says gleefully, then leaves.

Chris arrives at home, slamming the door behind him.  Eve is sitting on the couch, reading.  She looks up at him.  "What's your problem?" she asks.

"YOU are my problem!" Chris shouts.  "You think you're pretty clever, huh?  You, and Jessie -- well it didn't work."

"What are you talking about?" Eve asks.

"And then you go ahead and get Reardon in on your little plan, too -- are you actually dumb enough to think I'd fall for such a childish maneuver?"  Chris makes himself a martini.  Eve sighs.

"I just thought that maybe if the two of you had to spend some time alone, you would --"

"We'd what?  Kiss and make up?  Eve, she LIED to me, for months.  And I'm just supposed to forgive her now?"

"Jessie did NOT lie to you!  Can she help it that her number one priority isn't the almighty dollar and how to make more of them?"

"So you're on her side." Chris says.

"I'm not on anybody's side.  I just don't like watching two of my best friends, who are obviously crazy about each other, be miserable because of a stupid misunderstanding." Eve says.

"So your solution is for you and Jessie to come up with some stupid plan to --"

"Jessie had nothing to do with it!" Eve shouts, then gets a guilty look on her face.

"So you DID plan it.  I knew it!" Chris says.

"Okay, so maybe I did.  You and Jessie belong together.  God only knows why, they way the two of you argue, but you do.  It's not my fault you're too dumb to realize that!"  Eve says.

"Do me a favor, Eve.  Mind your own damn business from now on!" Chris shouts, and storms into his room, slamming the door.

Greg arrives at the hideout, takes out Kevin's gag, and gives him his dinner.  "Have you seen Ryan
lately?" Kevin asks.  Greg is silent.  "Greg -- he's planning on leaving Port Charles.  WITHOUT you."

"You're lying." Greg says.

"Am I?" Kevin asks.  "What if I'm not?  Greg, Ryan was here earlier.  He told me that he plans on killing both me and Lucy, and leaving the country.  You have to help me stop him.  He's not gonna give a damn about you, Greg.  Ryan only cares about Ryan, I've told you that I don't know how many times."

"Ryan said he'd help me start over." Greg says.

"It's a nice thought, but it won't happen.  But I will help you, Greg.  I promise you -- if you'll help me
get out of here, I'll make sure that you're taken care of.  I won't abandon you, like your parents did, and like Ryan is about to do.  You can trust me, Greg -- just let me out of here."  Greg is quiet again.  "Greg -- think about it.  Ryan is already making plans that
you've had no say in.  Doesn't that tell you somethingright there?  Is trusting him really worth the risk?"  Greg steps outside, fuming, while pondering what Kevin has just said.

May 28, 2001 -- late afternoon.  Lucy is at the new building for Jacks Cosmetics, frantically trying to organize the place.  "Don't you have a staff to do this?" Ryan asks.  Lucy turns around.

"Doc?  What are you doing here?" Lucy asks.

"I just -- thought I'd see how things were going.  Are you sure this place is gonna be ready for business next week?"

"Oh, it will be -- Doc, please come home.  I miss you." Lucy says.

"That's what I'm here to talk about.  Lucy -- I've been thinking about things, and -- I want to work
things out, I really do.  So I thought that -- maybe if we went into counseling together, we could --"

"Oh, Doc -- you don't know how happy it makes me to hear you say that." Lucy says, rushing over to him and reaching out to hug him.  Ryan pushes her away.

"I'm -- I'm still not ready for this.  But maybe once we start counseling --"

"Of course.  I'm sorry." Lucy says, backing away.  "When -- when can we start?"

"How about we wait until after you get this place ready, okay?  Then we'll start."

"Will -- will you come home?"

"I don't think I'm ready to do that yet -- but I would like to see the twins." Ryan says.

"Of course.  Victor and Mary are watching them while I'm working here -- you can visit anytime you like."

"I'll do that." Ryan says.  Lucy's cellphone rings.

"Hello?  Don, how are they -- what!  What do you mean they're not ready?  They HAVE to be ready!  Don, I will not accept another delay, do you hear me?  Don't you use that tone of voice with me, mister!" Lucy says.  She pulls the phone away from her ear and looks at Ryan.  "I'm sorry Doc -- I just have a teeny, tiny little crisis to deal with here -- I'll be back in a second."  Lucy leaves the room, still yelling at Don on the phone.

"Take your time." Ryan says, and he begins to look around the room.

May 29, 2001 -- early morning.  Ryan sneaks into the Jacks building.  He finds a secure hiding spot under one of the cabinets.  "Perfect." he says to himself.  "She'll never know what hit her.  Poor Lucy -- of course, I'll be devastated -- I mean, we were just gonna start going to counseling and EVERYTHING.  What a shame." Ryan says to himself.  He then plants a bomb, and sets it to go off a 5 p.m. that day.

Jessie arrives at the Lighthouse.  Lucy answers the door.  "Hey, you made it." Lucy says.  "I am  so very, very glad that you can help me.  It's just taking forever to get this place ready for opening."

"It's no problem, really.  Besides, what else do I have to do?" Jessie says.

"Chris still won't talk to you?"

"He won't even LOOK at me.  It's over, I guess." Jessie says.

"Oh, Jessie, I'm so very sorry -- I thought that you and Chris had something really special -- kind of like Doc and I."

"How is Kevin?" Jessie asks.

"He -- he wants to work things out." Lucy says, smiling.

"Oh Lucy, that's wonderful!" Jessie says, hugging her.

"I know.  Well, I guess we should get going, huh?  The twins are at Victor's, they're spending the night there.  We have SO much work to get done."

"Well, let's get moving then." Jessie says, and they leave together.

Victor opens the door when the doorbell rings.  "Monk -- it's good to see you." Victor says, as Ryan enters.

"I came to spend some time with the twins." Ryan says nervously.

"Of course, son.  But I'm afraid that little Daniel has a bit of a cold today, he's being a bit fussy."

"Well, then I'll just have to spend some time with my little girl." Ryan says.  He walks over to the
playpen, and picks up Dominique.  "There's Daddy's little angel.  How would you like to go to the park?  Wouldn't that be fun?" Ryan asks the child.

"Oh, she'd love that, Monk." Victor says.

"Well, then the park it is.  We'll see you later, Victor." Ryan says.  He scoops up Dominique and her
baby bag and leaves.

"You ready to go?" Eve asks Chris as she walks into the oncall room.

"Boy, you're anxious to get out of here.  First day back at work that rough?" Chris asks.

"I've got plans, Ramsey.  Unlike you, I HAVE a life." Eve remarks.

"Alright, fine, god forbid I should delay whatever it is you plan on doing." Chris says.  They leave the
oncall room, and Patrick is waiting by the car.  "What the hell is he doing here?" Chris asks.

"You're gonna drop us off at the house -- Patrick and I are going out for dinner." Eve says.

"We're celebrating Eve's first day back on the job." Patrick says.

"Thanks a lot for telling me he was tagging along." Chris says.

"Just get in the car, Ramsey." Eve says.

"Wait a minute -- I know what you're up to." Chris says.  "You've got Jessie waiting there, don't you?  This is all a big setup, just like before."

"Do we look so bored that we'd actually plan our social lives around YOU?  Get over yourself!" Eve says.  They get in the car, and Chris starts to drive.

"Don't you have a car yet, Reardon?" Chris asks.

"As a matter of fact, yes I do.  Jessie and I just carpool, that's all." Patrick says.  "She had to leave
early, and Eve said you'd be willing to drop us off."

"How nice of her to offer without consulting me." Chris says, turning briefly to glare at Eve.  Eve
ignores him.

"Patrick is moving into his new place in two days.  I'm gonna help him decorate tomorrow." Eve says.

"I'm thrilled." Chris says, trying desperately to ignore them both.

"You know, maybe if you'd just stop acting like a moron and patch things up with Jessie, you wouldn't be in this constant foul mood you've been in for over a week now." Eve remarks.

"And maybe if you'd just keep your nose out of my business I wouldn't BE in a foul mood, ever think of that?" Chris asks.

"Eve, maybe we should just let them work it out on their own." Patrick says.

"Oh, here we go with the goody-two-shoes act again.  Look, Reardon -- there is nothing, absolutely NOTHING you can do to make me get along with you, is that clear?  And the same goes for trying to reunite Jessie and I -- so just give it up." Chris states.  Eve turns to Patrick and sighs, rolling her eyes.

"Lucy, this place is fabulous!" Jessie says, walking through the building.  "It's perfect for
Jacks."

"I know -- can't you just picture this place, filled with models, and dozens and dozens of cameras, and all of my bestest clients, when I premiere our new summer clothing and cosmetic line right here in this very building.  You'll come, of course, right?"

"Are you kidding, I wouldn't miss it!"

"And just think -- Doc and I will have started to go to counseling by then, and -- he might even come, Jessie.  That would just be so wonderful."

"I really hope things work out for you and Kevin.  He just hasn't been himself since his whole ordeal in Ferncliffe." Jessie says.

"I know -- Jessie, it's just been so very, very hard.  He hasn't even let me near him since he got back -- I think something really, really awful must have happened to him in that nasty Ferncliffe place, and it's just making him shut me out.  He has this horrible scar on his shoulder that I saw the other day, and --"

"What?" Jessie says.  "Lucy -- which shoulder?"

"His --- his right one, it's -- it's right about here,  and --" Lucy begins, pointing to the spot where she
saw the scar on Kevin.

"Oh my god." Jessie says.  "Lucy -- that's where I shot Ryan."

"N-no!  No, Jessie, you can't possibly think that --"

"He wouldn't let you get near him.  You'd know, Lucy -- he knows that if you were to even kiss you'd realize that -- and he has a scar, on his cheek, he has to keep it covered with latex, so he couldn't let you --"

"Oh.  Oh my gosh, it -- oh Jessie, what has he done with my Doc!  That monster has my Doc!" Lucy says, intears.  Jessie reaches for her cellphone, and Lucy starts to race for the door, when the bomb Ryan planted explodes . . . . . . . . .

Ryan arrives at the hideout, keeping Dominique in the car.  He pulls out a book of matches and starts to head inside.  "What a horrible way to go.  Poor ‘Ryan'." he says to himself.  He enters the room -- it's empty.  "What the -- Greg!  Greg, where the hell are you?" he shouts.  "Kevin!"  Ryan searches the place -- it's empty.  "You lousy, double-crossing -- I'll kill you, Greg!" he shouts to no one.  Panicked, Ryan races back to the car.  He turns to Dominique in the back seat.  "It's okay, sweetheart.  Daddy just has to change his plan, that's all.  But don't you worry.  We're gonna be together.  Just you and me." Ryan starts the car and drives away.

Mac walks along the docks, and he spots a man lying on the ground, soaking wet and coughing.  "Hey -- you okay, mister?" he says, going to the man's side.  Kevin turns around and looks at him.

"Mac." he says, still coughing a bit. "Thank god."

"Kevin?  Oh my god, what the hell happened to you?" he asks.

"Cooper -- and Ryan -- they've been holding me prisoner.  Ryan's been pretending to be me this whole time."

"What are you talking about?" Mac asks.

"I got away -- I finally got away.  Greg Cooper came after me -- we struggled over a gun -- we ended up falling into the river, and the gun went off -- Cooper is dead." Kevin says.

"Are you sure?" Mac asks.

"I saw him die, Mac.  Of course I'm sure." Kevin says.  "We have to find Ryan -- he's gonna kill Lucy, Mac. We have to stop him."

"What the hell was that?" Chris says, as he hears a loud noise from off in the distance.

"It came from that way -- sounds like some kind of  accident." Eve says, pointing.

"Let's go check it out, in case they need help." Patrick says, and Chris turns the car around.

In the aftermath of the explosion, the building that was to be the new office for Jacks Cosmetics lies in ruins.  Near the place where the front door once was, Lucy lies buried beneath some of the rubble.  She starts to groan a bit, struggling to remain conscious.  "Doc -- where are you?" she whispers, then loses consciousness.  Further inside the ravaged building, the remains of what used to be shelving cabinets lies scattered about, and underneath the pile of broken wood we see Jessie  lying unconscious, blood covering her forehead.

Chapter 20

Chris, Eve, and Patrick arrive at the site of the new Jacks building, which is now in shambles, smoke and dust blowing everywhere.  "Oh my god -- that's Lucy's car.  And that's her new office." Eve says.

"She's probably still in there.  Eve, call 9-1-1.  Chris, are you coming with me?" Patrick asks, getting
out of the car.

"Are you nuts?  You know how dangerous going in there would be?  We should just wait till the paramedics get here, and once they get her out we can --" Patrick interrupts him.

"There may not be time.  Do you want to be responsible for some woman's death because you just stood by and watched?" Chris sighs and grabs the medical bags that the doctors have in the car.

"Let's go." he says.

"Hey, be careful in there!" Eve shouts, and calls for help on her cellphone.  Chris and Patrick begin to make their way through the rubble.

"Lucy!  Lucy, it's Chris Ramsey, can you hear me?" Chris shouts.  Lucy groans a bit, and Patrick hears her and turns around.

"She's right here." Patrick says, and both men rush to her side.  The begin to remove the rubble piece by piece until they can reach her.  Chris takes out his stethoscope and begins to examine Lucy.

"Lucy -- come on, wake up." Chris says, rubbing her hand.  Patrick starts to check her over as well.

"Pulse is slow but strong." Patrick says.  "She probably has a concussion."

"Well no kidding, Einstein." Chris remarks.  "We can't rule out internal bleeding, she needs to be examined in the ER." Lucy starts to open her eyes.  "Lucy -- can you hear me?"

"Doc?" Lucy whispers, struggling to remain conscious.

"We'll call Kevin as soon as we get you out of here.  Lucy, squeeze my hand if you can hear me." Chris says.  Lucy squeezes his hand lightly.  "That's good.  Do you know how we can reach Kevin?"

"Kevin.  What did he do with Kevin?" Lucy asks, still disoriented.

"Lucy, there was an accident at Jacks.  You're just a little disoriented right now, but you'll be fine.
We're gonna get you to the hospital, we'll take really good care of you there, okay?" Chris tells her.

"Where's Jessie?" Lucy asks.

"She's probably at home.  I'll call her when we get to the hospital." Chris says.  Lucy looks up at Chris.

"You have to find her.  She loves you." Lucy says.  Chris rolls his eyes.

"Great, even in a crisis situation I still get relationship advice." Chris remarks.  "Lucy -- don't
worry about Jessie right now, you can see her later.  I need you to tell me where you have any pain right now, okay?"

"Her leg is in pretty bad shape, Chris.  Looks like an artery was hit, she's losing a lot of blood." Patrick tells Chris, finally freeing the lower half of Lucy's body.

"Lucy -- I want you to move your right leg for me, as much as you can.  Can you do that?"  Lucy tries to move her leg a bit.

"It -- it hurts." she says, crying.

"Okay.  It's okay."  Chris says.  Patrick takes off his shirt and uses one of the sleeves as a tourniquet, trying to get the bleeding to stop.

"Did you find Jessie yet?" Lucy asks.

"Lucy, we'll call Jessie when we get you out of here." Chris says.

"No -- she was here.  We -- she was helping me, and --" Lucy starts to black out again.

"What do you mean?  Lucy!" Chris shouts, but Lucy has passed out.  Patrick looks at Chris.  "Oh my god." Chris says.  "Jessie!" he shouts, and starts to stand up.

"Chris, you need to wait for the ambulance to get here." Patrick says.

"Didn't you hear what she just said, Reardon?" Chris says.  "Stay with her."  Chris gets up and makes his way slowly through the rubble.  "Jess -- can you hear me?" he calls out.

Ryan is driving along the highway, wearing a disguise.  The tail end of a report comes on the radio as he's scanning the dial. Chamberlain is considered armed and extremely dangerous -- please call 555-PCPD if you have any leads regarding his whereabouts.  Dominique is in the front seat in the child safety seat.  Ryan glances over at Dominique.  "Let's just hope daddy can make it to Canada before someone figures out that you're missing.  Don't you worry -- we're gonna be just fine, you and I." Ryan says, grinning as he continues to drive.

Kevin is in the office at the PCPD, and Mac walks into the room.  "Hey mate -- here's some coffee, you look like you can use it." Mac says, and hands him the drink.

"Right now I just want to find Lucy." Kevin says.

"I know -- one of my men went out to the lighthouse, nobody was there.  She's probably at the new office." Mac says.

"What new office?" Kevin asks.

"She bought some new office space for Jacks -- I know she's been spending a good amount of time there, getting it ready to open." Mac tells him, just as an officer walks over to him.

"Commissioner, there was an explosion out in the business district -- looks like possible sabotage,
they need a team out there right away.  There was someone in there, too."  Mac looks at the information on the report.

"My god -- it's Jacks." Mac says, looking up at Kevin.

"Oh my god -- Lucy!" Kevin shouts, and the two men get up and rush out the door.

Chris walks among the rubble, calling out Jessie's name, when he hears sirens blaring in the background.  "Chris, we don't even know if she's in here!" Patrick shouts.  Suddenly Chris turns around and looks down, and sees a hand sticking out of the rubble under a pile of broken cabinets.  He immediately bends down and pushes the pieces of wood away, and finds Jessie lying  unconscious, covered in blood.

"Oh god -- Jess, no!" Chris shouts, frantically pulling the rubble away piece by piece.  He takes her
hand checks for a pulse.  He finds one, but it is barely there.  "Oh, baby -- you hang on, okay?" he
says.  "Reardon, get over here!" he shouts.  The  paramedics have just arrived and are tending to Lucy.

"Chris, there's another team on the way, they'll be here any minute." Patrick shouts.

"We don't HAVE a minute!" Chris insists.  "I can't lift this on my own, it's too heavy.  Patrick makes
his way over to where Chris is and sees Jessie lying there.

"My god." he says.  "Is she --"

"She's alive -- I want to keep her that way." Chris says.  "Let's get this off her -- are you ready?"
Chris asks.  Patrick nods his head yes, and together the two men lift the heavy piece of wood off of
Jessie's body.  Chris and Patrick immediately begin to examine her.

"She's not breathing." Patrick says, just as two EMTs make their way over.

"She needs oxygen, NOW!" Chris shouts.  The EMTs put an oxygen mask on Jessie, and Chris listens to her chest with his stethoscope.  "Left side sounds like possible collapsed lung -- let's get her out of here." Chris says.  "Be careful with her." Chris tells the EMTs as they put Jessie in a neck brace and ease her onto the gurney.  Chris remains at her side the entire time, holding her hand and talking to her.  "Honey -- it's Chris.  I'm right here, baby.  You're gonna be alright." he says, and gets in the ambulance with her as they rush her to the hospital.  Patrick makes his way out of the toppled building, his shirt torn and covered in blood from Lucy and Jessie's injuries.  Eve is standing off by Chris' car alone, watching as everything happens in shock.  Patrick walks over to her.

"Hey -- are you okay?" he asks.  Eve nods her head unconvincingly, and Patrick puts his arm around her.

"Ryan did this." Eve says in a nervous voice.  "He probably did." Patrick says.  "Come on -- I'll
take you home."

"No, I -- I want to go to GH.  I want to see how they -- he can't keep getting away with hurting people like this."

"I'm sure the police will find him.  Come on -- let's go." Patrick says, and they get in the car.

The ambulance carrying Jessie arrives, and they rush her into a trauma room in the ER.  "Well, what the hell are you people standing around here for?  We've got a patient to treat!" Chris shouts at the staff members in the room.

"Dr. Ramsey -- perhaps you should wait outside." a nurse in the room suggests.

"If I wanted your opinion I'd ask for it!" Chris shouts in anger, just as Dr. Boardman enters the room.

"Dr. Ramsey!  I want you out of this room, NOW!" he shouts.

"Dr. Boardman, I -- I need to stay with Jess, I've been overseeing her treatment on the ride over, and --"

"And I'm taking over now.  You've got no business working on a patient that you have such a close
attachment to.  Get out." Dr. Boardman says.  Chris looks at him angrily, refusing to leave.  "Dr. Ramsey, either you're out of this room in thirty seconds, or I'm writing you up on insubordination charges."  Chris takes Jessie's hand and touches her cheek softly.

"I'll be right outside, Jess." he whispers, and reluctantly leaves.  He walks out into the waiting
room, and slams his fist against the wall, just as Mac and Kevin arrive in the ER.

"Ramsey -- what's happening with Lucy?  Is she okay?" Mac asks.

"I don't know." Chris says.  "She -- I only got to see her briefly, it looked like an artery in her leg was hit, I don't know anything else, as soon as the first EMT team arrived I went to look for Jessie and --"

"Jessie?" Kevin asks.

"She was in the building -- helping Lucy, I guess.  She -- she's in pretty bad shape."

"Damn him, Mac.  DAMN HIM!" Kevin shouts, pacing nervously.  "Where's Lucy?" he asks.

"Kevin, calm down.  Would you mind looking in on Lucy?" Mac asks Chris.

"I guess I can do that." Chris says, and he goes off to find the trauma room Lucy is in.  Patrick and Eve arrive in the ER.

"Eve -- you're okay." Kevin says, looking up at her.  "I'm so sorry -- about what Ryan did to you."  Eve looks at him nervously.

"Eve -- I need to talk to you." Mac says.  "I'm gonna tighten security at your place, and have a guard on you 24/7 until Ryan is caught."

"He did it, didn't he?" Eve asks, still glancing nervously at Kevin.

"Ryan -- has been here this whole time.  He and Cooper held Kevin hostage.  Kevin finally got away, and -- Ryan is still out there."

"How -- how do you know he's not Ryan?" Eve asks.

"He's not -- we're positive." Mac says.  Eve looks up at Patrick.

"He was in my apartment.  Patrick, he was in my apartment." Eve says, shaking.

"Shhhh, it's okay.  He won't hurt you again." Patrick says, hugging her.  "Hey -- I'm gonna go see how Jessie is doing, okay?  Will you be alright out here?" Eve nods her head yes, and Patrick goes into the ER trauma center.  Victor arrives at the ER.

"Monk!  The police just called, I had to come right over.  How is Lucy?" Victor asks.

"We don't know anything yet -- it's so good to see you, Victor." Kevin says, hugging him.

"You too, son -- where is Dominique?" Victor asks.

"What are you talking about?" Kevin asks him.

"You came and got her, to take her to the park, and -- I assumed she'd be here with you.  Daniel is still at home with Mary, and --"

"Oh my god.  Mac -- he has my daughter!" Kevin shouts.

"Monk, I -- I don't understand." Victor says.

"Victor, Ryan kidnaped me and was holding me prisoner.  He's been impersonating me this whole time!  And that means that --"

"Oh, no -- you mean that my granddaughter is --"

"I'll call the department and alert them -- Kevin don't worry, we'll find her." Mac says.  Kevin sits
down, and buries his head in his hands.

"Monk -- I'm so sorry." Victor says, sitting down next to him.  "I had no idea that --"

"I know.  It's not your fault, Victor." Kevin says."Ryan's gonna pay for this -- I swear."

Lucy starts to awaken in the ER, as Chris is tending to her.  "Hey -- how are you feeling?" Chris asks.  Lucy looks up at him.

"Did -- did you find Jessie?" she asks.

"Boardman is taking care of her -- he made me leave, said I was too emotionally involved to be in there.  Kevin asked me to look in on you -- he's in the waiting room, would you like to see him?"  Chris asks.

"No -- no, that's not Kevin!" Lucy says, becoming very agitated.

"What are you talking about, of course it's Kevin.  Lucy, you've got a minor concussion, I'm sure you're just a little confused right now.  I'll go get Kevin, okay?"

"No!" Lucy shouts.  "It's Ryan -- all this time, it's been Ryan." Lucy says, in tears.  "And I don't know what he did to my Doc."

"Are you sure?" Chris asks.

"There -- there was a scar on his shoulder.  He -- he said he got it while he was at Ferncliffe, and I told Jessie about it, and -- it's where she shot him.  We were just about to call the police, and -- I don't remember exactly what happened, but --" Chris rushes out of the room and into the ER waiting room.  Kevin stands up.

"Chris, how is she?" Kevin asks.  Chris lunges for Kevin, putting him in a chokehold and slamming him against the wall.

"THAT was for what shooting me in the leg, you sick bastard!" Chris shouts, and grabs Kevin's neck, choking him.  "And this is for Jessie, and for Lucy!" he shouts, as Mac and Victor try to get him off of Kevin.

"Chris, stop it!" Eve shouts, just as Patrick comes out of the ER.  He manages to help Mac and Victor pull Chris off of Kevin, and holds him back as Chris continues to try and lunge for Kevin.

"That's not Kevin, that's Ryan!" Chris shouts.  "Aren't you gonna do something, Scorpio?"

"I'm not Ryan." Kevin says, sitting down and catching his breath.

"Liar!" Chris shouts.

"It's the truth, Ramsey." Mac tells him.  "Ryan was impersonating Kevin -- Kevin got away.  And so did Ryan -- with Dominique."  Chris calms down.

"I -- I'm sorry." Chris says, and Patrick lets him go.  "Are you okay?"

"Yeah.  How is Lucy?"

"She'll be fine.  She has a minor concussion, and she needed quite a few stitches in her leg, she'll be
limping for awhile.  She's pretty banged up, but there's no sign of internal injury.  She'll be pretty
sore for a few days, and she should probably take it easy for about a week."

"I want to see her." Kevin says.

"She -- she thinks you're Ryan.  Maybe Mac should go in and explain everything to her first, I don't want to scare her."  Chris says.

"Of course." Kevin says.  "Mac, don't -- don't tell her about Dom.  I need to be the one to do that."  Mac nods his head in agreement, and leaves the waiting area.

"Is there any news on Jessie?" Chris asks.

"She's being taken to ICU." Patrick says.  "I was just in with her."  Chris looks at him nervously.

"Is it bad?" Kevin asks.

"We'll know more once she wakes up -- her head CT shows some minor swelling so we're keeping a pretty close eye on her." Patrick says.

"Has she been conscious at all?" Chris asks.

"Not yet." Patrick says.  "It's more than likely the concussion coupled with the lung collapse is causing her loss of consciousness.  She may be out for a while yet; probably until at least tomorrow morning."

"What about internal bleeding?" Chris asks.

"No sign of it.  She needed stitches for the gash on her forehead, though.  As long as the swelling goes down, aside from the collapsed lung, she'll probably just be pretty sore and stiff for about a week.  As long as she gets plenty of rest and takes it easy for awhile she should be fine." Patrick says.  "Like I said, once she wakes up we should be able to make a more definite diagnosis."

"I need to see her." Chris says.

"She should be in ICU in about five minutes -- but Chris, you're not her doctor, and you know that only family can --" Patrick begins.

"You think I give a damn about the rules right now?" Chris asks.

"Of course -- you can see her." Patrick says.  He walks over to Eve and puts his arm around her.  "How are you holding up?" he asks.

"I -- I want to go home." Eve says, still very upset.

"You'll make sure she gets home okay, right?" Chris asks.

"Of course." Patrick says.  Chris starts to leave the waiting area.  He turns around.

"Hey Reardon." Chris says, and Patrick looks up at him.  "Thanks -- for helping me get Jessie out of
there."

"You're welcome." Patrick says.

Kevin enters Lucy's room, and she looks up at him nervously.  "Doc?" she says, still a bit unsure.

"Mac -- told you what happened." Kevin says, sitting down next to her.  Lucy takes her hand and runs it up and down his cheek, and her eyes begin to fill up withtears.

"Oh, Doc!" Lucy says, and Kevin takes her in his arms.  He kisses her intensely on the lips.

"I love you so much, Lucy." Kevin says.  "And I will never be away from you again."

"I should have known that -- something wasn't right.  But I just thought -- all that time you spent in
Ferncliffe, maybe something had happened and --"

"It's not your fault." Kevin says.  "Ryan fooled everyone."

"But he shouldn't have fooled me, Doc.  I should have known."

"Lucy -- don't do this to yourself.  You need to get some rest, alright?  I'll be right here with you."

"Doc -- how is Jessie?" Lucy asks.

"She's in ICU." Kevin says, and Lucy looks up at him nervously.  "Don't worry -- she'll be okay.  She's in good hands."

"I want to see her tomorrow, okay?  And the twins -- thank goodness the twins were with Victor and Mary and not with that monster!"

"Lucy -- I need to tell you --"

"I want to see my babies tomorrow, Doc -- will you bring them to see me?" Lucy asks.

"Yeah -- tomorrow." Kevin says, unable to bring himself to tell her about Dominique.

Chris enters the ICU room -- Jessie lies unconscious in her hospital bed, a large bandage covering the gash on her forehead, and bruises on her arms and face.  Chris sits down in the chair next to the bed and takes her hand, kissing it gently.  "You know, you didn't have to go to these lengths to get my attention." he says.  "I've been a real jerk to you, haven't I?  I'm sorry, Jess.  I'll make it up to you somehow.  You just get better, alright?"  Chris reaches over and gently strokes her cheek.  "I love you, Jessica Collins.  And I will NOT lose you." Chris kisses hercheek softly, then sits back in his chair and sighs, still holding her hand and never taking his eyes offof Jessie.

Patrick and Eve enter the penthouse apartment.  Sirens are heard passing by the building, and Eve jumps in a panic.  Patrick wraps his arm around her.  "It's okay -- it's just an ambulance, there's nothing to be afraid of."

"What if he's out there?  What if he comes here -- he's been here, Patrick.  He got in my front door." Eve says.

"It's not gonna happen." Patrick says.  He leads Eve to her room, and makes her lie down.  "Do you want a sedative?  You're pretty upset."

"No." Eve says.  "I'll be okay."

"You try and get some sleep." Patrick says, and he starts to get up.

"Patrick, don't leave me!" Eve cries out.

"Don't worry, I'm not leaving -- I'll be out in the living room all night."

"No, no I don't want to be alone in here.  Please stay with me." Eve begs.  Patrick turns around, and sits on the edge of her bed.

"Eve, it's okay.  Nobody's gonna hurt you ever again."  Patrick leans his back against the headboard, and Eve curls up next to him, her head resting on his chest.  Patrick looks down at Eve as he holds onto her tightly, and softly runs his hand through her hair.  Suddenly, he reaches down and kisses her forehead.  Eve turns and looks up at him, a bit surprised, and Patrick locks his eyes with hers and gently kisses her on the lips.  Neither of them say a word after the kiss, and Eve cuddles up closer to him and sighs as she closes her eyes.

"What a beautiful baby." the stewardess says, as Ryan and Dominique board a plane, Ryan still in disguise.  "Is her mother meeting you at your final destination?"

"No.  Her -- her mother is dead." Ryan says, faking extreme sadness.

"Oh, I'm so sorry." the stewardess tells him.

"It was a very sudden death -- she was in an accident.  My little girl is all I have left now."

"Well, she's absolutely adorable." the stewardess says.  "Let me know if you need anything during your flight."

"I will.  Thank you." Ryan says.  He looks down at Dominique and smiles.  "See, I told you daddy would keep his word -- we're going to be so happy together."

Kevin watches Lucy sleep for a moment.  He reaches down and kisses her, and goes out into the hall to a payphone and makes a call.  "Yes, this is Dr. Collins.  How is my patient?" Kevin asks the person on the other end of the line.  "Good -- look, you promise me, no unauthorized personnel will have any contact with him, right?  I need him to trust me completely -- tell him that I won't be able to get out there for awhile, I have an emergency situation to deal with here.  But I'll be there as soon as I can -- and I'll call him soon.  Thank you." Kevin says, and he hangs up the phone.  The person on the other end hangs up the phone -- it is a doctor, and the patient in the room with him is Greg Cooper!
