Types
Besides RCC, there are other rare types of kidney cancer. About 6% to 7% of kidney cancers begin in the renal pelvis, contrary to belief, the point where the kidney joins the ureter. These tumors are called transitional cell carcinomas. If found early, these cancers have a 90% cure rate. This type of cancer is prone to recurrence, so repeated follow-up examinations after surgery are important. The next form of kidney cancer is relatively rare, Wilms’ Tumor. It accounts for about 5%-8% of kidney tumors in children. It is thought to be caused by genetic mutation that causes abnormal growth within the tubules of the kidney nephrons. It typically appears in children between 2-5 yrs old, but has been known to occur rarely in adolescents up to 15. Untreated, Wilms’ tumor can spread invading veins, lymph nodes, the adrenal glands, large or small bowel and the liver. Advances over the past few decades have made this type of kidney cancer one of the most curable of all childhood cancers. Another rare form is Renal Sarcoma, a disease of the kidney’s connective tissues that accounts for less than 1% of all kidney tumors. Its symptoms are similar to those of RCC. The only potentially curative form of treatment is surgery. (http://www.oncologychannel.com/kidneycancer)
