Risks/Causes

Risk factors and causes of kidney cancer are endless. There is strong evidence linking cigarette, pipe, and cigar smoking as a risk factor, 25%-30% of all renal cell cancers are directly associated with smoking. The overuse of painkillers has been linked to RCC, as well as chemical exposure to chemicals like asbestos and cadmium. It is suspected that inherited genetic mutations may be the cause, and sometimes triggered by damage to the DNA. Cigarette smoke is known to contain chemicals that can damage the genes of kidney cells. Other risk factors include age, diet & weight, and gender.
