Starcraft News for June 26th

New B.Net Channel
Blizz has added channel "Custom SCMs" to it's public channels for b.net. It will be added to the list in a few days but u can access it now by typing the name in. Read Pat N's post on it here.

SC Demo Update
Blizzards site says 3 new maps not 4 (i believe the fourth is the tutorial mission). You should be able to play the Demo against other shareware (demo) versions, just not full (cd) versions. (thanks wargasm) The download is 28 megs and u will need atleast 50 megs free to play. If anyone finds u can build higher than a seige tank lemme know :)

On the Zap Hack
OK is it a hack or isn't it? AlenL says no way. The ppl that got burned say yes way. So i decided to email The Helper and get his opinion. If u don't know who Helper is u don't read the tech forums much :0 Here's what he had to say and as always thanks Helper :

I do not believe this is a real hack. The kinds of errors this guy is reporting are consistent with what support told him. If anything he just got nuked, and had some other programs running in the background when it happened. I cannot be 100% sure about this as I have not been monitoring the forums this week but in my opinion that is what it is. The kinds of problems this guy reported just are not consistent with a hack or cheat that another user could put on them.

Terran & Protoss Part 4b released
Quickshot 14 has informed me the latest in the ongoing campaign is out. You can download "The Protoss & Zerg Problem 2" here. Please note -*Don't play unless you killed Zule at end of part 3.* Contains 5 SCM's.

FFVII Released
FFVII is now shipping for the PC. Has 4 CDs - Game is on three, the fourth is the install disc. Includes drivers and basic game engine. Thanks to Michael for this info :)

Should you upgrade to Win 98?

The SC Demo
Lan must be really bored since StarShack still isn't up. He sent me a couple news items :) Here's the low down on the new SC Demo. Download it here:

• There are 4 new maps, all part of the single player story line.
• You can't play on Bnet .. u can go there, just cant participate in any game
• You get only one race .. terran
• You dont get to see the protoss .. you play against the terrans and the "xenomorphs" ( thats what the zerg are called )
• There is a little story tho .. it takes place b4 the terran missions in the full version.
• the best troop u can have is the seige tank ... u cant build turrets .... u can build a comsat station
• no cut scenes.
• u get to use General Duke in tank mode ...
• its a good demo...very playable and very fun (tho a little easy for veterans)

On the Ranting
Earlier i ranted about a post on SC.Org that was taken from my site without proper credit. I emailed indigo on this and he was very polite about it and had no idea what IrKiLlEr had done. So to SC.Org and indigo i apologize for losing my temper. And to IrKiLlEr - next time u copy someones news posts and send them in as tips to other sites, be sure to include the URL u got the news from as well. ~Tender Fury~

Can't access StarShack?
Seems they've gotten so popular they're overloading the server :) Lan sent me an email and says they are getting a new one today and that by the end of the tomorrow things should be back to normal.

FoxHole Moves
SC.Org announced they are now hosting Terran's Foxhole The new URL is http://www.starcraft.org/foxhole/ The new layout looks very nice, check it out :) SC.Org also said they have plans to host similiar sites for Protoss and Zerg in the near future.

Judge throws Injunction out
Blizzards injunction to halt sales of Micro Star's "Stellar Forces SC Add-On" on the grounds of copyright infringement was thrown out by a California judge recently. No news yet on if Blizz will take any further legal action. Read the Games.net article here. [new source - SC Infinity]

ALL AI Scripts here
Infoceptor has all the AI Scripts from the campaign levels. These can be used in place of the computer AI Scripts that come with the editor. Download the zip file here.

Cool Program
Saw this over at Infoceptor also. It's about a real time voice communication program currently in beta and due out very soon. And yes it supports SC.

Battlefield Communicator adds real-time voice communication to multiplayer games over the Internet and local area networks. It features support for TCP/IP and IPX and is designed to work over a dial-up modem connection. Recently we have extended our software so that it will include support for Starcraft! Work has been underway on Battlefield Communicator for over 7 months. We have recently put our web page online are within a month of releasing a public version of our software. There is a closed beta program currently underway, but we will be expanding the beta program in the near future. We hope to include some Starcraft players in the new beta program when it begins. The initial version will support two players in a peer to peer connection and will be free. A server based release which will support a greater number of players is also in the works...

The Missing Roar
Blizz left out an Ultralisk ability from the final cut of the SC cd. This was called "Roar", basically a toned down blood lust. A guy named Mu was able to locate the mpq file and u can listen to it here. it's pretty cool sounding :) [news source - SC.Org]

Mac StarCraft Beta
The Mac Beta is underway but this time Blizz is not allowing the testers to release any info. yeah that'll work :) SC.Org has allready recieved an email from one of the testers. Glad to see Mac users won't have to wait as long for SC as they did Diablo. Here's the email:

Anyhow, they just began testing the first beta last week. Battle.net,the map editor and pc-mac multi-play is not ready yet. Other than that, the game appears rock solid and has not crashed on me once. If you have any questions let me know. I will send you updates when a new cd/patch is released.

New Strat Posts
StarShack has 3 new strat posts. Reaver Drops by Chaplin and Marines and Irradiate by Hammeron. The Irradiate strat can be deadly against the zerg, give it a read. There's also the Terran Rush, by Josh up. This is a new all marine strat ppl are trying out. SC Extreme has 2 new items. Effective Ways to Clog Up Ramps and A Funny Battle Story. Don't forget to check out their msg board also.

Noteworthy Site
The Path of Ascension is a cool site dedicated to the Protoss. Currently there are 42 Protoss strats/tactics written by many SC players. Check out the site and submit your own strategies. Nice to see a Protoss site for a change.

Games and Computer AI's
The Games AI Page has an extensive section on computer Artificial Intelligence, looking at such games as Ultima Online, Unreal and Half-Life - and the advances they have made over other games in the same genre. Other games covered include Close Combat 2, Battle Cruiser 3000 A.D, and Age of Empires. Check it out.

Amen: The Awakening
Cavedog has launched a web site for their upcoming first-person action adventure game Amen: The Awakening. Three preliminary screenshots, as well as more information. Check it out here.

New Hack
There is reportedly a new Hack out called the "Zap" Hack. There are several posts in the tech support forum on this. This hack was first reported on Sunday, (3 in the first thread) and caused some very nasty probs to this guys computer and SC. (Appears to mess with graphics and Win Registry) Luckily this has only happened to a few ppl so far, as reinstalling SC does not fix the prob. Some discussion is going on as to if this is a Windows 95 prob or a WinNuke, possibly even a worm virus. This is not a nuke, nukes do not mess with your registry. Another report of the hack and Blizz's initial response here Since this has been reported by about 5 ppl now, all in the last few days, i don't think Blizz's answer applies anymore. It seems too coincidental. Read the most recent thread on this here. If u experience any of these probs plz contact Blizzard at support@blizzard.com with as much info as u can and post in the tech support forum. Maybe they will be able to do something about it soon.

Unit Weaknesses
Webbster at SC Infoceptor has compiled a chart (MS Works format) of all the units weaknesses. Should be handy if your having trouble with certain units or races. Download the zip file here. Deathwing also has a strat tip u might want to look at if your having trouble with your BC's and Zerg. Quest for the Battlecruiser - contains the management of BC's and how to use them at max efficiency against Zerg. He says it's never failed. Read it here.

Quake 2 Level Editing
PCGames has posted a guide for Quake2 map editing. If you've always wanted to create your own Quake 2 levels, but weren't quite sure how or need some help this articles for u. Read it here.

Kali 1.47 Released
Kali has released beta v1.47 You can upgrade your current version or do a complete download. Upgrade v1.44, Upgrade v1.45, Upgrade v1.46 or get v1.47. New features in v1.47 :

• Added launch support for: Z.A.R., Dark Omen
• Added option to drop mail from ignored users.
• Added Descent and Descent2 server games to the games list. By joining these games you are connected to the server the game is running on and the game is launched.
• Fixed pinging servers problem (it never stopped).

SC RPG
NetNexus has opened the online StarCraft RPG beta, Terran Legacy, to the public. Head over, try the game out and then go post your comments in their forums section.

StarCraft Demo
Blizzard has announced that the SC Demo will be available for download on June 25th at 18:00 PDT. You'll be able to download it from blizzard.com and the ZDNet Software Library. You can also download the Brood War and D2 videos from their homepages here...Brood War homepage, Diablo2 homepage.

The WinNuke/OOB Patches
Since nuking has reared it's head again, looks like it's time to remind everyone if your going to use b.net u need the following patches to protect your system from WinNuke/OOB Attacks, Teardrop, ICMP and SSPing. Most Diablo veterans are aware of this prob, but if you're new to b.net, u may not have installed these patches. Click here for all the patches u will need. Please note that some ppl have experienced probs after installing these patches. BUT, if u follow the installation order below u should have no probs. Thanks to Wargasm for the link and info for all the patches.

*** IMPORTANT *** If you don't already have the MS DUN 1.2 upgrade, you should follow this procedure to avoid potential problems. Install the MS Winsock Update first(*wsockupd.exe), then the MS DUN 1.2 Upgrade(*msdun12.exe) and then finally the Winsock 2.2 Upgrade (*ms_wsock2setup.exe). Following this upgrade you will need to apply the vipup20.exe patch to protect from denial of service attacks: TEARDROP,ICMP,WINNUKE,SSPING.

Terrans Vs. Hydras
Chaplin over at StarShack has posted a Terran vs. Hydras strategy tip with a skill level rating of 4. He plans to add a Protoss vs. Hydras tomorrow. Read it here.

SCM of the Week
The Bunker Command Map is a 96x96 Badlands map for 4-6 players. It's a trigger driven map with some unit modifications. This one sounds like a lot of fun, check out the description here. Or Download now!

Star 69 Blizz Style
SC Legacy has an email Blizzard sent to Fraek concerning disconnectors. Here's how to get revenge on those pesky cowards:

If you want us to take action try to get a screenshot of them stating they're going to disconnect or the "waiting for player" screen as you destroy their base. Based on this we can wipe their ladder records.

Bot Attacks
Lan over at StarShack had a report of ppl getting kicked/banned from channels on bnet by a 'bot. Here is a letter he received from Blizz about it.

"This weird person is actualy a kid and male. (We won't go into why he likes to tell people he's a girl) and uses OOB to make your connection to battle.net lock up to kick you off. You can get the patch at www.microsoft.com to avoid OOB attacks." - AlanL

Chaplins Latest
Chaplin has a new strat post. This time it covers Protoss defending against the Zerg early in the game. Read it here.
