I'm thinking along the lines of Spike being a sweet, though slightly effeminate, guy that is eventually 'toughened up' by his peers. One day, he meets someone that he feels connected to, someone just like him. The guy even shortened his name like William had shortened his to Iam. Yep, Xander was a great guy. They watched each other's back, took turns keeping up with a redheaded gal that followed them around. That gal ended up cornering him and giving him a speech that became known as the 'infamous shovel lecture'. He was the lucky being that received it first. But being as how he was only fifteen and convinced he was straighter that an arrow, he didn't get it. That is, until he reached his eighteenth birthday...
