Depression is a serious mental disorder that can make a person miserable, sad, depressed, blue, lifeless and lethargic for months to years on end. Here are some symptoms to watch for:
Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that you once enjoyed
Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping.
Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
Decreased energy. fatigue, being "slowed down"
Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts
Restlessness, irritability
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
Mania is related to Manic depression. Manic depressives have low periods and then "high periods" where they do things that may be harmful to themselves. They will sometimes stay up for weeks on end with little sleep and work on projects. When a low period sits in, they may sleep for weeks, not go out not eat and other things that are associated with depression.
Symptoms of Mania:
Inappropriate elation
Inappropriate irritability
Severe insomnia
Grandiose notions
Increased talking
Disconnected and racing thoughts
Increased sexual desire
Markedly increased energy
Poor judgment
Inappropriate social behavior
