The most interesting site of early European settlement on North America is Port Royal and Annapolis Royal. Port Royal was the first permanent settlement in North America. Built in 1605 by the French as a business adventure, (fur trade) it had a short life, since the English brunt it out before it was ten years old. This site has been rebuilt with all aspects of life as it was. Across the harbour you will find Annapolis royal. A well sited fort built by the English as a port/strategic settlement. It changed hands between the French and English several times, (at least nine). Well sited the defensive works of the fort have been remade as they originally were. The Royal Gardens of Annapolis royal are a must, all types of vegetation and even a model of an Acadian dyke. There are good facilities in the area if you are traveling from outside the area.
