Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin duPont Manual High School
Topic: Basketball

Zakiyyah Shahid- Martin “Z” signed a national letter of intent with St. Johns University of the Big East. Z Martin, a 6’2” forward from DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, KY was the lone senior on the team that finished ranked #2 in Kentucky. Z is the #3 ranked senior prospect in Kentucky according to ESPN HoopGurlz  (4/22/10). Z was a McDonalds All American Game Nominee.

 Evaluation from ESPN HoopGurlz:

“Zakiyah Martin might be the forward that a college coach would order off a menu. The 6-2 Manual standout is long, lean and athletic. She's very fluid in her movement and has impressive speed and quickness. Her game around the rim is solid and she has the ability to put it on the floor some. She's active at both ends of the court and a wide wingspan makes her particularly imposing on defense. What really catches your eye is the effort and intensity that she plays with and the interaction with her teammates. She's only going to get better and better.”

St. Johns just completed one of the most successful in history for the Red Storm as it finished the year ranked in both Top 25 Polls for the first time in program history. The Red Storm ranked No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and No. 15 in the final AP Poll. The team finished the year with a 25-7 record, earning the most wins since 28 in 1982-83. St. John's posted a 12-4 slate in BIG EAST action, finishing tied for fourth in the league while tying the program mark in BIG EAST wins.

The Red Storm made its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, eventually advancing to the second round with a 65-47 win over Princeton. St. John's came close to making its first appearance in the Sweet 16, dropping a 66-65 overtime decision to then-No. 11 FSU in second-round action.

STJ posted its biggest win in program history this past season, defeating then-No. 4/3 Notre Dame on Feb. 16, 76-71. It was the third win all-time for STJ over the Irish, with all three coming under the direction of Kim Barnes Arico.

The above info was emailed to me by the coaching staff at duPont Manual.  Congratulations and best of luck to “Z”.

12th Annual East-West Roundball Classic

A few more thoughts and tidbits on this event held on April 10th.

Boys

There were several excellent players displaying their skills during this event.  Some of the top performers included 6-3 Sr. Larry Mimms (Louisville Valley). 6-4 Jr. Josh Stroud (Fairdale), 6-1 Jr. Malcolm Foster (Elizabethtown John Hardin), 5-11 So. Charles Foster (Louisville Trinity), and 6-6 So. Nathan Dieudonne (Louisville Trinity).

Team #9 won both games with an “iron man” performance as their roster was limited to five players because of “no shows.”  The five players were 6-4 Jr. Josh Stroud (Fairdale), 5-10 Jr. Desmond Brown (Louisville Central), 6-1 Jr. Malcolm Foster (Elizabethtown John Hardin), 5-11 Jr. Isaiah Jones (Louisville Central) , and 5-10 Jr. Corbin Maynard (Louisville DeSales).  Team nine may of have been limited in numbers but not in ability.

Louisville Trinity was well represented with a talented trio of sophs in Nathan Dieudonne, Charles Foster, and Troy Saxton.

Ashland Blazer was also well represented with the trio of sophs in Corey Gregg, Ryan Whetsel, and Kyle Bush.

Keep a watch on the promising young stars including 6-0 Fr. Chris Gillespie (Paris Bourbon County), 6-1 Fr. Kyle Brown (Olive Hill West Carter), 6-5 Fr. Jordan Miller (Fulton Fulton City), and 5-10 8th grader Zach Chaykowsky (Barlow Ballard Memorial).

Girls

Several girls had excellent performances today including 5-8 Sr. Whitney Reed (Louisville Butler), 5-6 Jr. Natalie Greenwell (Elizabethtown), and 6-1 Jr. Kristin Perry (Olive Hill West Carter).  Whitney Reed did not play her senior year but she obviously has been working hard as she played extremely well today.

Harlan Independent brought several girls to this event and the future looks bright for that school.  6-0 So. Ashley Mullins, 5-6 Fr. Kelly Cox, and 5-7 7th grader Torri Mitchell played well for Harlan today.

Evidently the girls from Union County found the baskets to be “friendly” today as Madison Dayberry, Rachel Buchanan, Jalyn Houston, and Rachel Hodge shot well during their games.

6-0 Jr. Adelaide Luckett (Elizabethtown) continues to impress with her ability to shoot and rebound.

5-5 7th grader Deja Turner (Covington Holmes) impressed with her ability and court awareness for such an early age.  6-0 7th grader Kelsey Garcia from Warfield KY shows a lot of potential with good size and ability.

Conclusion

Several other boys and girls had good performances and I was very impressed with their effort and work ethics.  While I was impressed with the event , Rick Bolus, Kris Vance, and Jeff Allgood will strive to improve and make the event even better next year.

East-West Roundball Classic Notes: Natalie Greenwell

One of my pet peeves with basketball today is the inability of so many players all the way from high school to the professional ranks to shoot free throws.  Many trips to the free throw line becomes high adventure with little accuracy or success.  I had the plearure to attend the East-West Roundball Classic April 10th and got to see a master at the line.  5-6 Jr. Natalie Greenwell from Elizabethtown makes the art of shooting free throws look effortless.  She has excellent concentration, good form, and gets results.  I checked on the KHSAA website for the 2009-2010 season and she was 91 for 109 from the line for a 83.5% rate which put her high in the state rankings.  I believe with the game on the line it’s obvious that I would have the ball in her hands.
