The offense got the headlines but it was a big defensive stand that ensured a Henry Clay 39-23 victory over Paul Laurence Dunbar tonight.  Henry Clay held a 27-23 lead in the third quarter with Dunbar on Henry Clay’s seven yard line with a 4th and one play.  Henry Clay’s defense stopped the play and the Blue Devils took over on offense.  On the second play from scrimmage Davion Jackson went 88 yards to the Dunbar two and a penalty moved the ball to the one yard line setting the stage for a Elijah Bell one yard touchdown run.  That made the score 33-23 and gave the Blue Devils a little breathing room.

Henry Clay recorded 21 first downs and 476 yards of total offense.  The Blue Devils were penalized once for four yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.  Paul Laurence Dunbar recorded 18 first downs and 343 yards of total offense.  The Bulldogs were penalized five times for 39 yards and lost three fumbles.

Elijah Bell led Henry Clay’s ground game with 172 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.  Davion Jackson carried the ball 17 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns.  Sammy Carter completed 12 of 15 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.  Austin Black caught four passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns.  Gunner Kelly added four receptions for 49 yards.  Lakwon Givens led the defense with four solo and 10 assisted tackles.  Rhoman James added five solo and two assisted tackles.  Da. Robinson, Quentin Gay, and Maurice Gibson each recovered fumbles with Gay returning his for 62 yards.

Cam Pergram led Dunbar’s ground game with 63 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.  AJ Williams carried the ball 11 times for 52 yards.  Brandyn Duncan chipped in with 50 yards on eight carries and Darien Hardaway recorded 43 yards on seven carries.  Emory Thompson completed four of eight passes for 104 yards.  Jay Coleman, Donte Allen, Jmaurion Dunn, and Cam Pergram each caught a pass for 36, 33, 26, and 9 yards respectively.  Derante Sanders led the defense with seven solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling seven yards.  Jmaurion Dunn added three solo and six assisted tackles.  Emory Thompson recorded four solo and one assisted tackles and recovered a fumble.  AJ Williams intercepted a pass he returned for 46 yards,
