Ryle vs. Lexington Catholic (Girls) January 19, 2010

Ryle  (11-5)  vs.  Lexington Catholic  (8-9) (Girls)

Ryle coach Patti Oliverio started the following lineup: 5-11 So. Jenna Crittendon, 5-7 So. Tyianna Douthit, 5-10 Jr. Liz Meyer, 5-7 So. Ashley Cheesman, and  5-5 Jr. Abby Jump.  Lexington Catholic coach Tony Talbott countered with5-11 So. Alex Botkin, 5-8 Fr. Octavia Wilson, 5-11 So. Liz Walton, 5-5 Sr. Meghan Cawood, and 5-6 Sr. Anna Gayle Scott.

Lexington Catholic took a 35-22 halftime and held on down the stretch for a 66-62 victory.  This was a game of surges as the score was tied 20-20 in the second quarter but LexCath finished the quarter with a 15-2 run.  Ryle came out blazing in the third quarter and behind the hot three point shooting by Ashley Cheesman and Abby Jump tied the game at 47-47 after three quarters.

The game remained close throughout the final quarter with Ryle plagued by foul problems and Lexington Catholic guilty of numerous turnovers.  Lexington catholic managed to hit their free throws down the stretch for the victory.  Ryle was whistled for 22 fouls with Ashley Cheesman and  Dawn Johnson fouling out and Abby Jump and Jenna Crittendon having four fouls.  Lexington Catholic on the other hand turned the ball over 21 times in the second half leading to 28 Ryle points.

Lexington catholic shot 46.7%  from the field including one of six from the three point line. The Lady Knights connected on 23 of 29 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 21 Ryle turnovers.  Ryle shot 36.8% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Raiders connected on 15 of 21 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 32 points off 31 Lexington Catholic turnovers.

Octavia Wilson led Lexington Catholic with 2o points including eight of eight from the free throw line.  Alex Botkin added 14 points and nine rebounds.  5-9 Sr. Lexi Mullikin recorded 13 points and five rebounds.

Ashley Cheesman led Ryle with 18 points including three three point baskets and dished out six assists.  Abby Jump added 12 points and recorded six steals.
