August 6th, Sunday

It was a HOT MUGGY day, but breezy.  John and Mary Ann loaded the precut window and door studs as well as the wood for the sole plates into the truck.  We started laying the sole plates.  Marg came over to help.  John did the nailing and cutting and Marg and Mary Ann helped align the boards and unload all the boards.  John and Mary Ann even got to waltz around the sun room.

The sole plates were slow going and very labor intensive, but it gives a shape to the rooms.
John promised Mary Ann a waltz in the sunroom.  So, when the sole plates were nailed down, the promise was met.

August 7th, Monday

The day started early.  John was up and working at 5:45 AM.  He reorganized the barn in order to store the shipment of windows that were arriving today.  Unfortunately, we will probably not get to install them for quite awhile.  He worked on building the double top plates that are placed on the sole plate.  Alexandria and Dylan watched for some of the time.  All the plates for the first floor have been completed.  You can now see the outline of each room including where closets, fireplaces, doors and windows will be.

Alexandria and Dylan watched as Grandpop fitted the double plate.  Grandma made them sit in the chairs because she gets nervous when they are on the open deck.

August 8th, Tuesday

It was another early start.  We got about an hours work in before a thunder shower rolled through.  It was overcast when we started back to work, but that quickly gave way  to sunny hot and steamy.  John went around the perimeter marking the position of every stud in the outside walls.  Mary Ann moved and restacked the standard nine foot studs in the sunroom, about 130 of them.  It was an exciting milestone to raise the first wall.  We worked together and made solid progress.  Keith came over after work and helped raise one of the heavy walls and the high outside ones.  It is great to see the walls, but we wish it had been about three weeks ago.

It doesn't look like much, but we were overjoyed to see this wall go up.
We worked together and made good progress.  Mary Ann slowly overcame some of her fear concerning holding the walls on the sole plates.
The end of the day yielded very satisfying results.

August 9th, Wednesday   John's Birthday

Another early start on a hot day.  The first birthday greetings were received from Steph, Perry and Nicholas via e-mail.   We worked on raising a number of interior walls.  You can now see distinctly all the rooms and closets.  We ended work early to have a special birthday dinner at Marguerite's. It was a good thing we hadn't planned on going back to work.  We were so full.  The dinner and the chocolate chip cheesecake were wonderful.  Alexandria brought over birthday balloons to brighten Grandpop's day, Cathy and JJ had made sure Daddy got a practical gift of work boots.

John can always use sturdy work boots.
What a meal!    The birthday cake was extra special.  It was decorated with "tool candles".

August 10th Thursday

There was a severe storm last night and we worried that the walls may have been torn down in the winds.  All was fine and we got an early start.  It was a day of delays.  We worked on interior walls.  As a break from the sweltering heat, we cut headers for the windows and doors inside the barn.  After dinner we finished the closet walls.  Now there are only the corners left in the main section of the first floor.

It was a relief to get out of the sun. The headers go over every door, window and archway.  This house has a lot of them.  They are made up of two solid pieces of wood and plywood filler strips for the extra thickness.

August 11th, Friday

The weather was great and the progress was significant.  Most of the headers for the windows were set in place.  Part of the walls for the sunroom were also raised.  The wall that divides the Great Room from the sunroom was put up.

If you look closely, you can see the headers over the windows in the kitchen bump out (Right side of the picture).  On the left, you can see the first sunroom wall section and the dividing wall between the great room and the sun room.

August 12th, Saturday

Another good day for working.  John and Mary Ann raised the remaining two sunroom wall sections.  Keith helped John frame out the gable end of the sunroom.   They also worked together to put the special headers in and frame out the spaces under the windows.  This is going to be one fantastic room.

This is such an exciting point to be at in the construction.  Every room now has wall framing and a distinctive shape.  The next step is very difficult.  Because this an open room, it needs a huge main ridge beam to support the structure.
