(From his home town news-paper.)

"I managed to avoid watching "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for a year after the series started, because I knew if I started, the soap-opera like quality would be infectious and I did not want to spend the emotional time such an ensuing addiction to "escapist" Television would demand, but Al, a former NASA employee, who was interested particularly in Asimov's perspectives on robotics, said, "Check out Data". I gave in and became glad for it. I had watched the original show in the '60s and in countless reruns in the seventies. Now I got hooked and watched all the episodes of Next Generation in their first run and reviewed them in rerun on weekly local latenight TV. So what? It beats dependencies on drugs, alcohol, and self righteous, fanatical, self absorbed, exploitive, escapist religion, while not enough people volunteer themselves to help those in the World who are in needless pain, or are hungry, or without adequate medical help, or do not have the where with all to resist those who insist on using them or perverting their trust, lives, and souls while pretending to be their friends. If I had a dollar for every Nam vet who had one excuse or another in the early eighties why he could not/would not make himself vulnerable in an effort to reach out to Brothers less together or just hurting more, I would be retired off the invested amount and living over some other garage, in the Florida Keyes. Brother Al was not one of those faint souls. He showed up, stood up, cared, and pitched in. His heroism in the face of his own pain shrivels the faint hearted. Every Trekkie/Trekker (silly as being a fan of a TV show like Star Trek may seem to some), who believes in the 'Prime Directive', understands who Al was and why those whose lives he touched loved him. All Davidson was one of the few truly righteous men of our times."
--Ed Andrews, July 1999

DISCOVERING REALITY IS
LIKE PEELING AN ONION...!

Al, so quiet and serious,
thoughtful and shy,
an engineer by profession,
a geeky sort of guy.

But mention design
and his eyes would light up.
He'd grab pen and paper.
He'd get all tied up.

He'd sketch out a kitchen,
an ergonomic design,
all the major appliances
in triangular lines.

When he left late that summer,
we guessed he went west
to finish his studies
away from his past.

But it seems a year later,
he felt hope was gone,
so he ended his life
as he lived it, alone.

I don't know how he felt,
despair, pain, or fear.
I don't know if he thought
of his family waiting here.

I know he had sorrows,
wife and child lost in Hue;
a fight with depression,
and poor health on the way.

His second wife died
as they drove home one night.
He carried that blame,
never brought it to light.

Focused on a narrow goal,
he continued to try,
but through the last steps
his success was denied.

I am sure, knowing Al,
that he thought it all through.
Perhaps he sketched out
the angles to use.

However he planned it,
it didn't take long,
Shotgun to the chest
and then he was gone.

For years we had hoped
to see him drive in,
to collect his belongings,
to settle here again.

But now he's not coming,
and all we have left
are some boxes, some memories,
much sorrow to heft.

I miss Brother Al
and his kind, friendly smile.
Since I can't say good-bye,
I'll miss him awhile.

Maybe some distant day,
when we're able to forgive,
we will talk of our memories
and again Al will live.

_____________________________________________________________ Al, FUCK!!!! What happened to Al? This has been a freaky week. Got e-mail today about another death, child of somebody I know, also e-mail from Dubuque about guy I knew who died. I forwarded your e-mail to Randy. Tell me more about what happened to Al? Bill.

_____________________________________________________________ ...PS I just went to Dad's web page since I hadn't looked in a while. Did Al really commit suicide???????? Last I heard was that Dad had thought maybe he found him but wasn't sure that was him. Your poem/letter was very good and heart wrenching. I was surprised at how much seeing this information upset me so I called Karla to read her what you wrote. She too was upset. We agreed that it must be that even though we were not CLOSE with the man, he was a figure in our lives for a long time and obviously very close to Dad. We also remembered the rides in his convertible, the necklaces he gave us, and the numerous nights spent on his waterbed watching TV while Dad and him were in the living room at his house in Dubuque. The tribute to him is very well done and I think will be touching to any who reads it and never knew him. Kelly.
