" Our Thanks To John Spizzirri For His Graphic Image, 'Lost Patrol,' Background Behind The Image Of Randy Smith's 1-4 Pony, Destroyed October 31, 1968. Equally Painful Earlier That October, Was The Massacre Of A Second Platoon Night AP On The 4th! At Bearcat, I Was Assigned To Bravo First Platoon, To Replace Tony Delacerda, Bravo 1-4 Squad Leader, An Impossible Act To Follow, Whom I Wish I Could Have Known And Learned From. In the group I was in at Familiarization Training, Only Two Of Us Were Shakenbakes, Vern E. Lockner And Me. Vern Went To Alph Co. And Was Killed In April. John Spizzirri Would Normally Have Been On The Second Platoon Patrol, But Wasn't. This Is How It Was. Either one of us could have drawn Our Friend's Plight, But Didn't. You Could Do Everything Wrong Or Right, Be In The right Place Or The Wrong One, and Live Or Die Without Any Connection At All To How Competant You Were Or Weren't. After A While You Just Accepted There Were Odds And did What You could to Get Everyone Through, And At some Point You Realized You Had Outlived All The Odds And had No Explaination Anymore How Or Why. You Didn't Stop To Think About How Much Death There Was, But It Seemed To Pile Up all Around, In Corners, And In The Open, Everywhere, But Go Largely Unseen In Its Larger Sense Of Finality. There Wasn't Time Then for More. Then You Were Short And The Idea Of There Being Odds Returned To Mind, Because It Occurred to You That You Might Not Run Out Of Tour Before The Odds Caught Up." --Ed.
