HAPARA VIOLENSIA AGORA - Violence In The Class.

In Los Palos peace school, my duty was teaching English and art to kids aged 7 until 9 years old, and there were about 50 kids in the class. In the first day teaching, I was so nervous, million questions appeared in my mind, "what am I gonna do if kids don't pay attention?" or, " what am I gonna do if kids get bored." and the questions continue…I never teach kids that much! In My church's Sunday School, I teach only one class with 25 kids, and that's the most.

I prayed, asked Him to give me wisdom, strenght and patience, and then I prepared the best I can. And the class went well that day. Phew. I could exhale. My Los Palos team gave me compliment about the way I teach. They said I did a great job.

Well, at that moment, I felt proud, and said to myself, "ha.. I'm talented to be a kids' teacher.." then the compliment made me forget that I did that not because of me, myself but because God has given me wisdom and strength.

And the day after, I didn't prepare well, I thought, " Yesterday class went well, so will today!" But you know what? That day the kids were all suddenly became 'wild', they were all hard to control, started from one boy hit his friend, then the hit became a chain actions, other kids hit another. The girls also kept chatting and yelling to each other. Gosh! What happened to them? Later, I realized that my proud has ruined everything, made me thing that I didn't have to prepare well, and thought that everything would go well because I can handle everything! Lack of preparation made the kids bored, and started to make troubles! Compliments don't always give good result ;)

Anyway, when all kids started rioting (hehe), some helpers (the native teenagers who volunteer helping us teaching in peace school) start to hit and pinch the kids and shouted angrily. I was shocked; I don't like what I see. I tried to stop them, but one of them said, " We can't be too nice to kids, just hit them to make them shut up!" OMG….., but what I saw, the violence didn't work! The kids became wilder, they hit the helpers back, they yelled. Argh! I felt so dizzy.

It is said, that violence also happens in their 'real' school, some teachers prefer to bring such sticks to frighten the kids. I wish I could make them realize that violence will never work! There are so many ways to make the kids calmer, without violence, or physical punishment that could injure the kids and my favorite is what Byeol and Eric did. First they hugged the wildest kids, and sat next to them, followed them sang. Byeol, Eric… you both were amazing!

Or, this one is also my favorite, one day I saw Eric, lifted the kids upside down! And another time, I saw Sang Gag Opa wrestled the kids. I can see that both of them didn't do it to hurt the kids.
