  • Well here it is. On this page I will place various Final Fantasy news, sorted depending on which game the news is for, and what date the news came out (or what date I got the news, which may be two different dates, if I cannot find the date the news was released). I will try to check for news every day or two, but if you have some news I don't have, feel free to Email it to me. Please make sure the news is at least two days old before you send it to me.

    General Square News

As you may or may not have heard, Sony has bought a large portion of Square stock - 19% to be exact. What does this mean? Well, for starters, Sony will have a large say on pretty much all of Square's future projects. I'd guess that the first thing Sony will change is Square's hopes of having a multi-platform MMORPG with FFXI. How can they do this you ask? It's quite simple, really. You see, each stock share entitles the holder to one vote at every board meeting. So, once they hold a vote on whether or not to make FFXI a multi-platform rpg, all 19% of the votes that are in Sony's possession will be against it. And unless a insaly high majority of everyone else is for it, that 19% will be the deciding factor. I suspect that Sony will have simmilar influence on a lot of Square's other projects in the future, though nothing that will be detrimental to Square.

    Final Fantasy X
    Update for 12/17/01:
I've had this posted in various places over the site, but in case you havn't seen it yet, FFX will be released the 18th. Tommorow, as I write this. Wish I could be buying it then, but my mom has a severe shortage of items to get me for christmas, so there's no way she'll let me buy pretty much anything. Oh, plus they're only shipping 500,000 units. Considering Japan sold over 2 million units in the first week, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that FFX will be fairly hard to find. I would tell you to reserve it, but it's a smidge too late for that now, isn't it? Just get to your local gaming store when it opens if you don't have it on reserve, and you should be fine. Of course, tommorow is a school day, and your parents might not like the idea of you missing school to buy a game. Unless, of course, you're already out on Christmas break (not 'winter' break, christmas break). I, however, don't start christmas break until next monday. Oy, this weeks gonna be a long one (have to wait 'til the weekend to see The Lord of the Rings too...)

I know I already have a FFX info section, but most new news that comes out belongs on a news page such as this more. In short, I'm leaving the FFX info page as it is, with the plot info, and basic game structure info, and putting all the other news, such as changes to the game, release dates, and any other noteworthy information as to the development of FFX will go here. Anyway, on to the news.

Okay, let's talk release dates. Since the majority of the people looking at this site will be from North America (plus the fact that that's where I'm from), that's where I'l start. The North America release is schedualed for early 2002. Can you survive all that time without marching down to SquareUSA headquarters demanding an early copy 'Or Else'? If you said yes, then you're a stronger person than I ^_^. But please, stay strong, form support groups, take your anger and frustraition out on your younger siblings, whatever you have to do to keep your sanity and stay outside of prison. After all, I doubt the wardon would let you keep your PS2 in your cell. Let alone let you actually buy the game. That'd be a 'bum rap' as they say. Square is already working on the English translation of the game, so be patient.

Moving on, let's talk next about the Japanease release. As you may or may not know, FFX was released ealier this, the week of 7/16/01. Although Digicube preordered about half of the initial stock available (which, according to squaresoft, was 2.14 million copies out of an expected total of 3.8 million sales in Japan alone), faithful gamers were still excited enough to forget their humanity and go beserk all for a copy of the long-anticipated game. I wonder how thankful they are that they always get the biggest video games first. If they're not as grateful as... well, something that'd be really grateful, I'd be really mad at the entirity of the Japanease nation. That's right, even the non-video gamers. "One bad apple spoils the lot" as they say. [Note: The previous statement was not serious, and should not be taken as such. Especially for legal purposes]

As you can imagine, there are several new media clips from the game, including (and quite possibly limited to) screen shots and movies. If you're interested in seeing some of these new glimpses into a world we will not know for another 6 months or so, check the FFX info page. I'll be adding the link there as soon as I save my work on this page. Which is right now. Go check, Hurry!

    Final Fantasy XI

As most of you loyal Final Fantasy fans already know, FFXI will be a online game. Which is one reason it's being released alongside FFXII. Anyway, the big-wigs at Square have announced that FFXI will be released for multiple platforms, in order to achieve a true universal online game. So far the only plans announced are for the PS2 and PC, but Square has made very strong hints that it will also be released for Nintendo's GameCube, and Microsoft's Xbox.

Here is what Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy, had to say when questioned about the possibility of FFXI appearing on the Gamecube and Xbox. "That certainly is a possibility. In fact, executives at Square are very enthusiastic about Nintendo. Square is moving into online games. Final Fantasy XI, which will be released next year, will be a fully online game. To make that work, you have to transcend hardware. If we want to do financially well online, we need to exist across all consoles."

    Final Fantasy Chronicles

Most of you probably already know a lot about this one. After Square recieved complains, petitions, etc. that are too numerous to count, they've finally broken down and have released FFIV and Chrono Trigger for the PS. Final Fantasy IV has been released in America before as FFII on the super nintendo, but the version of FFIV that has been released for PS2 contains more items, spells, harder enemies, as well as having other features that make this version appealing to those who have already played it.

While FFIV speaks for itself, being the best of the Final Fantasy series in many gamer's eyes, other's may be left wondering about Chrono Trigger. "But that's not a Final Fantasy game!" Let me acknowledge your powers of observation. CT is not a FF game. However, it is a squaresoft game; a well liked Squaresoft game at that. I personally can name 5 people off the top of my head that I know that say CT is one of the best rpg's of all time. Which is why Chrono Cross, the sequal to CT, recieved poor reviews by some. They thought it was an injustice to the Chrono Trigger name or something. Anyway, it's supposed to be really good, and many fans were disappointed by the low availability of the game, so they've included it in Final Fantasy Chronicles.

    Final Fantasy Tactics

As you may or may not have heard, Squaresoft is re-releasing Final Fantasy Tactics. What does this mean? In a nutshell, you'll be given greater access to a great Strategy RPG that was under produced during it's first run, making a lot of fans disappointed for not snatching it up when they had the chance.

Start counting the days. On July 31, 2001, Final Fantasy Tactics will be re-released on the "Greatest Hits" collection of PS1 games. Be warned, though, that Tactics is unlike the other PS Final Fantasy's. Not only because it is a Strategy RPG, but because it contains elements such as the Job system (Classes would be a more familiar word). Reguardless, FFTactics has been praised as a very good RPG. Plus it's a Squaresoft Final Fantasy; two phrases that make any game great.
