-What made "Japanese Animation" so different from the stuff you saw on your typical average saturday morning cartoon? One can think and ponder on this thought for a while, yet they still can't manage to realize why; or at least, I myself can't stoop to thinking so. One day I turn on the television and witness a sheer technical cartoon feat, one which succeeds in underlying the various aspects which distinguish live-action films, as well as the cultural significance of cartoons and comic art in general. And yet so much visual brilliance, artistic talent and visionary pioneering in mechanical, dynamic comic art and animated storytelling could only hope to achieve the many groundbreaking artistic renderings of "Anime". An animation medium which I feel, has become an undeniably definitive genre of filmaking. -It is a success and artistic achievment as great as any, reaching peaks of unimaginable artistic advancment in animated motion picture and incomprehensibe popularity in both Japan, America and many other countries. This recognition has given Japanese animation a well-deserving position in the lines of many great animation pioneers of our time. But like most filmaking and television genres, "Anime"; as it's been made to be called in the 90s, contains it's share of pioneering filmakers and artists. The many distinguished directors and visionaries of Japanese animation, helped established the genre to what it is today. In it's 40-year history, the plethora of films, television series & mini-series, theatrical and video releases and recognized animators has sky-rocketed anime's popular success as a competitive animation film industry. With this success arose fantastical films of visionary masterworks in both technical and production aspects. Indeed, "Anime" can be said to be within itself; a genre all it's own. -What was it that first drew you to anime? What it the stunning and masterful art and technical aspects found in the various films and television series; which exceeded anything seen on 'saturday morning cartoons'? Was it the mature and smart storylines and plots, the timeless characters and memorable moments; things which distinguish this genre among other aspects. Or was it because it was unconventionally someting unique, offbeat and underlyingly groundbreaking in it's own right. Did it go beyond anything which was to be defined as a "cartoon". Anime is timeless and entertaining. It's recognizable and distinguishable from any other art or film medium. It's indeed, highly entertaining and spellbinding all it's own. Anime continues to defy the imagination of comic and animated art, as well as the aspect of animated film entertainment; and how we as a society view cartoons. In all it's greatness, imagination and success; uncle "Walt" himself would truly be proud... -There were the great animes and the bad animes, but all were anime; and with knowing all this, "The Anime Overview" took the time to examine the great achievments in anime motion picture and television.
