-"The Anime Overview's" pick for the #1 greatest anime of all time is none other than "Choujiku Yousai Macross"; Super Dimentional Fortress Macross. Better known as the Hugely popular "Robotech" in the United States. It's success and popularity has sky-rocketed into something more than the anime industry could have possibly imagined. -An epic love story told like a legend, "Robotech" soon became an internationally acclaimed phenomenon; and a groundbreaking technical feat in the world of Japanese animation. I don't care what kind of animation or anime fan you are, one cannot meet a fellow animation film fan that is not familiar with this cornerstone visionary masterwork. The original series was directed by "Noboru Ishiguro", though the huge success of the show was first launched by the famed "Carl Macek", the man responsible for much of the success of anime in the United States. Macek is a pioneer in the airing of Japanese animation on U.S. Television. The rights to the series was developed by Macek, who wished to transform the industry of serialized "Saturday morning cartoons" in America; to the present percentage of anime programing in the U.S. on network television. A television distribution industry named "Harmony Gold" agreed to Macek's wishes in airing "Super Dimentional Fortress Macross". A Translated version derived from the original script and dialouge of the "Macross" series in Japan. Although the show had made it's way on air in America, the series did at first have difficulty getting on network television. While running nearly short of the expected full-85 episode desired run, "Macross" Ran for only 36 episodes from 1982 to 1983. Macek seeked "Ahmed Agrama", a man responsible for running a dubbing studio for anime in America. He had adapted and released several of Leiji Matsumoto's works such as "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" And "The Queen Of A Thousand Years". Macek went on to run two more parts of the Macross series, the 23-episode "Super Dimentional Cavalry Southern Cross" (Choujiku Kidan Southern Cross) as well as the 25-part episode run "Genisis Climber Mospeada" (Kikou Souseiki Mospeada). Both ran from 1983 through 1984. "Tatsunoko Studios" was responsible for bringing the legendary macross comics to animated film. The three aired series were comprised of several characters which appeared thoughout the three runs of the "Macross" series. While each season contained it's share of unique designs and epic plots; this probably had not accumulated as much success as Macek had hoped. Not nearly as much as it was going to shortly after it's first-run. -When "Revell Toys Inc." agreed to produce Macek's "Macross" saga in the form of various merchandise, action figures and toys; it's success would soon sky-rocket into something much greater than before. Macek had always envisioned and pioneered throughout the run of the series, the ideals of intergalactic races and transforming combat in space. Thus the "transforming/action battle 'Macross' toys were born. Revell had established the much more internationally accepted and well-known label of "Robotech", for the purpose of toys that contained robotic-like functions and weapontry. And the rest is history. -It is a history which success has reached a huge peak of popularity and recognition in the world of anime. "Robotech" is truly the artistic idealism of "Japanese Animation". The series is both a production and technical groundbreaker. Pioneering in the aspects of character development, animation style and visual excellence in cartoons and "Japanese Animation". Robotech is truly deserving of a place in anime history, and a spotlight in "The Anime Overview's" Pick for the greatest anime of all time. Back To Main Page |
