What exactly is an EVA?
At first glance, an Evangelion would appear to be little more than your everyday, run of the mill, giant Japanese robot. BUT, that doesn't even come close to describing EVA, in fact, they're not even robots. The EVAS are first introduced as man's ultimate fighting machine against the beings known as angels. However, that also, is merely a facade.
EVA's original purpose was not even to be used as a weapon. Essentially, the EVAs are in fact, human. Each Evangelion was cloned from DNA extracted from the first angel, known as Adam. All except Unit 01, who was cloned directly from the second angel, Lilith. All EVAs also contain a human soul and a will of their own. It is generally believed that an EVA takes a soul upon it's first activation.
To keep the EVAs under control, they are covered with "armor" which is nothing more than bindings to keep the beasts inside the EVAs from going out of control. Further measures to keep EVA under control is through a system of supplying them with power through an umbilical cable. Without the cable, EVA can only maintain activation for five minutes by running off an internal battery that is used for emergency situations.
EVA is piloted by children selected by the Marduke Institute in accordance with the Human Instrumentality Commity. All of these selected children share several things in common, they are all born some time after 2nd impact occured, they all have no living mother, and in some way, shape or form, they have had a troubled past.
