BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Though Unit 00 is the Prototype, it is not the FIRST Evangelion. The first EVAs date back to 10 years ago, however, the farthest any of these EVAs came along in production was usually the head piece and spine and in some cases, the hands were completed as well. No reason was ever given as to why none of these EVAs were ever completed. With that said, Unit 00 is the first COMPLETED Evangelion.
Arguably the second most troublesome EVA next to Unit 01. Unit 00 failed it's initial full activation test which was held some time before the Third Children arrived. There was a failure with the third stage connections and Unit 00 went out of control, it force ejected the entry plug from itself and started to attack the NERV personnel before it ran out of power.
Twenty two days later, the Unit underwent a second activation test and was successfully activated. Then, both Unit's 00 and 01 were deployed together against the fifth angel. Because of the attack, Unit 00 suffered massive damage. For the next several months, Unit 00 was repaired, re-painted in a blue hue and fitted with shoulder mounted weapon storage compartments. From that point on, Unit 00 held a regular position in the detachment list.
Unfortunately, in the attack of the 16th angel, the pilot Rei Ayanami, the First Children, initiated the unit's self-destruct sequence while containing the Angel within Unit 00. The blast not only wiped out the EVA and the angel, but also the entire city of Tokyo-3. Miraculously, the pilot survived with only a few wounds. The reason as to the survivle of the First Children is still under investigation by SEELE.
COMBAT RECORD
After successful activation had been achieved, Eva 00 was dispatched with Eva 01 to attack the fifth angel. Since Unit 00's pilot had a lower synch ratio than that of Unit 01's pilot, Eva 00 was assigned to back-up Unit 01. The angel's high intensity particle beam had completely melted Unit 00's armor.
Unit 00 didn't see action again until the attack of the ninth angel. With NERV's power completely cut off, the three EVAs were launched manually, marking the first operation of all three EVAs. For this attack, each EVA assumed a position of either defense, offense or back-up. Unit 00 was the back-up and was responsible for decending down the vertical shaft to recover the dropped pallette rifles. Unit 00 tossed a rifle to Unit 01 who fired a volley into the angel's core, destroying it.
With the attack of the tenth angel, all three EVAs were dispatched at random locations around Tokyo-3 in anticipation of the angel falling from the atmosphere. EVA 01 came into contact first and caught the angel, Unit 00 neutralized the angel's AT field, allowing Unit 02 to attack it's core and destroy it.
Although dispatched to combat the 12th angel, Unit 00 didn't participate in any actual combat.
The thirteenth angel used Eva Unit 03 as the instrument of it's attack. Units 00, 01 and 02 were sent to intercept the target. After defeating Unit 02, the angel moved on to Unit 00. Eva 00 attempted to sneak attack the angel from behind, however the angel sensed Unit 00's presence and jumped ontop of it. It then attempted to pass itself into Unit 00 to bring it under it's control. The order was given to sever the EVA's left arm causing damage to both EVA and it's pilot and could no long continue combat.
Several days later during the 14th angel's attack, Unit 00 was sent into combat after failure to activate Unit 01. Eva 00 was still missing it's left arm and went into combat with an N2 mine. Rei attempted to shove the mine directly into the angel's core. However, the angel quickly put a shield over it's core just as the mine exploded. With no other defenses, Unit 00 was quickly and brutally defeated.
A month later, the 15th angel appeared in Earth's orbit and attacked Unit 02 by "raping" the pilot's mind. Unit 00 attempted to fight the angel using the long range custom positron rifle. However, by the time the beam reached the angel, it didn't have enough power to penetrate the angel's AT field. Unit 00 was then ordered to proceed to Terminal Dogma to retrieve the Lance of Longinus which was then used to attack the angel. Unit 00 threw the lance towards the angel which on contact pierced both the angel's AT field and core, destroying it instantly.
Unit 00 was again dispatched to fight against the 16th angel which retaliated by attempting to fuse itself with both Unit 00 and it's pilot. Unit 02 was sent in to back-up, but the pilot was unable to operate her EVA and was then sent back to Headquarters. With no other alternatives, Unit 01 was brought out of cryo-stasis and immediately launched to assist Unit 00. Sensing Unit 01's active AT field, the angel immediately went on to attack Eva 01. Rei Ayanami declared that she wouldn't let the angel hurt either Unit 01 or it's pilot and initiated Eva 00's self-destruct sequence. Both the EVA and the entire city of Tokyo-3 were lost in the blast. However, Rei miraculously survived.
