How many times have we heard in the news or read in the papers about a child who has been sexually or physically abused? The fact is that these types of abuse are widely reported and prosecuted but we are often unaware of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse or psychological maltreatment, as it’s sometimes called, is often given the least attention along with being underreported, or flat out ignored. Emotional child abuse is often difficult to detect and document. In order to better understand and provide accurate assessment of emotional child abuse, we must be given a standard definition of it.
