Area Volunteers Instilling Desire

“The problem is that we have concentrated exclusively on teaching children how to read, and we have forgotten to teach them to want to read. There is the key: desire. It is the prime mover, the magic ingredient.” Jim Trelease, The New Read-Aloud Handbook

AVID Readers promotes literacy by recruiting volunteers from the community to read to pre-school children once a week for 30 minutes to an hour. This experience gets pre-schoolers excited about reading and gives them the foundation they need to learn to read. Over 169 volunteers are reading with 373 children at 10 child care centers here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Youth and adult volunteers share their passion for books on a weekly basis as part of AVID Readers- Area Volunteers Instilling Desire.

This program was developed in response to the need for early literacy outreach. According to the 1998 National Assessment of Educational Progress 38 percent of fourth graders across the nation cannot read at grade level. Research shows that 75 percent of children who read poorly at the end of third grade never become successful readers (National Education Asso.) Thus, a future where 29 percent of adults cannot read at a functioning level is possible.

"These are all our children. We will all profit by, and pay for, whatever they become." James Baldwin
