Newtypes

Newtypes are a much debated anomaly throughout the Gundam universe. Some say that they are the next stage of mankind's evolution, while others say that it is just propaganda. In the 'Earth Collapse' timeline Newtypes do exist, but are few and far between. Newtypes are people that are said to be able to manifest not only superb reflexes, but also rudimentary powers of empathy and telepathy - they can project their thoughts across space, and sense the presence of other human beings. Since there was no Flanagan Institute in this world, all of this is still concidered to be myth. In short, Newtypes do exist in this world, but those few do not truly know what they are, or what they are capable of.

Newtypes in the EC world are a bit of an anomoly. While some haave sprung up from time to time, nothing has been studied, researched, or documented on the matter. Most people that are Newtypes know nothing about their nature as such, believing that they are simply exceptional in one way or another. While one may have reflexes that make them faster or have an almost clairvoyant 'fore-sight', it varies from person to person.

This being said, the only true hint that one may have that actually lets them know that they are different, is a link that a Newtype can experience from the pressence of another Newtype, and even then they may not know what it is that has taken place. Some Newtypes have a certain, 'spacial awareness' which can allow them to control special mobile units. Newtypes however do NOT have the ability to read peoples thoughts, control the thoughts of others, fire psychic blasts or talk to people with their minds.

Note on augmented humans.
As a whole, humanity has always strived to better themselves. Most of this is aimed towards higher learning or in physical pursuits. However, there are always those that look to pursue this goal through means of science. There have always been tales of individuals that go beyond the limits of normal people, to this end there have been people that have looked to advance humanity by trying to take them to the 'next level' of human evolution. At the time of the Great War, illegal research was conducted to augment or 'strengthen' human beings. To this end, there were several successes in this area where a test subject would survive the experiments and excel in either mental capacity or physical reflexes.

Most subjects died either during or shortly after experimentation, and all suffered from various side effects, ranging from exertion-induced migraines, hallucinations (while awake or extreme nightmares) to being wracked by extreme pain and convulsions when not constantly supplied by medical support and special drugs. ((Think strengthened Humans from Zeta Gundam/Gundam X and the artificial Coordinators from Gundam Seed/Destiny.)) It is rare for one of these individuals to have survived after the Great War either from the conflict or groups trying to eliminate evidence of the heinous acts conducted in the name of science.
