December 1, 2001 was 100 years since the foundation of THE RUSSIAN VEGETARIAN ASSOCIATION. This is an event of national scale. On this day representatives of the vegetarian movement in Russia held a meeting on the Pushkin square in Moscow.
The meeting was held to attract the public's attention to the fact that there is a vegetarian movement in Russia. From the time of the October 1917 revolution the Soviet government did all it could to get rid of vegetarianism or slander it. Vegetarianism has been labeled as "a part of western pseudo-culture", "a cult", and a movement that "damages soviet health". The authorities closed all vegetarian organizations and for many years have been persecuting the leaders of the vegetarian movement. They have been hindering the development of medicine and the production of vegetarian foods. They fought agains Russian culinary culture, and have been speading the idea that vegetarianims is not a spiritual way of life, but merely eating vegetables.
THE EURASIAN VEGETARIAN ASSOCIATION unites all those who support the ideas of vegetarianism. as a morally imperative way of life characterized by non-violence, compassion and spirituality. The aim of the vegetarian movement is the improvement of the physical, psychological and spiritual health of the nation, creation of healthy environment and promotion of healthy lifestyle. We believe that vegetarianism is the world view fitting the new milennium.
