Ah, everybody's favorite renovation room: the kitchen! This room was in really sorry shape. The linoleum floor was peeling and faded. The shoddy metal cabinets were not even fastened to the wall. The water heater, a stacked washer dryer, and another washer to replace the broken stacked on all took up valuable space when they could have been in the utility closet just a few feet away. Inside the utility closet lurked an old oil furnace which was vented through the old, cracked (and leaking!!) chimneys of the retired pot bellied stove. One of the old stoves also collected dust and leaved in the utility closet. The kitchen was dark and dreary. The walls were a sorry patchwork assembled of drywall scraps. It was obviously a later addition to the house. A touchingly rustic stairway with a rough hewn log as a hand rail and an old floor board and a cross brace, led up to the rear of the second floor. We relocated the water heater and new stacked washer dryer into the utility room where they reside with a new electric HVAC and an octopus of shiny silver insulated ducts. We relocated the new stainless steel fridge from under the stairs, to closer to the stove. All the cabinets were replaced with attractive wood cabinets and a butcher block counter top. The stove was replaced with a new stainless steel convection oven. A matching dishwasher and cabinet mounted microwave were added. A stainless double sink with built in drainboard and gooseneck faucet were installed (with a garbage disposal). Plaster was patched, smoothed, and painted. Electrical wiring was upgraded to grounded three prong and appliance outlets were brought to code. Our beloved pot rack chandelier from Casa Rosa was installed. The steel door was replaced with a French door, allowing more light, and the broken, leaky, rotten windows were replaced. Finally, a checkerboard pattern of cork tile completed the floors. The kitchen was reborn! | ||

Connecting the dining room to the kitchen is a butler's pantry. One side is lined with rough hewn shelves. the other has a small window. We did little here other than panting and refinishing the floors. Future plans include the addition of a wet bar.
