[Strategy] [How To Take Notation]

K means King
Q means Queen
R means Rook
B means Bishop
N means Knight
X means Takes/Captures
= means Promoted To
+ means Check
Draw means Draw
++ means Checkmate

  1. If you move a queen from h2 to d6, simply write Qd6.

  2. Unlike the Queen and other pieces, the pawn has no symbol. If you move a rook to h4 you write Rh4. But if you move a pawn to h4 you simply write h4.

  3. If you want to say that the pawn on d4 takes a piece on c5 then you write: dXc5.

  4. If you put an opponent in check (lets say for the heck of it with a rook) by moving to g4 then you write: Rg4+. This goes the same for checkmate (just put two plus signs instead of one) Rg4++.

  5. If you promote a pawn (lets say to a knight) then you write e8=N.

  6.  If the bishop on h4 takes a knight on g5 then you write BXg5.

  7. Refer to Figure 1. Lets say it is whites move and white is going to move its knight to f4. You would usually write Nf4. BUT, if I was using the notation sheet to recreate the game, how would I know which knight moved to f4? Lets say it was the knight on d5 that moved to f4. In this case (to avoid confusion) you would write N5f4.

  8. Refer to the Figure 2. Lets say it is whites move and white is going to take the black bishop on f1 with a rook. You would write RXf1. BUT, if I was using the notation sheet to recreate the game, how would I know which white rook took the black bishop? Lets say the rook on al took the bishop on f1. In this case (to avoid confusion) you would write RaXf1.

  9. If you are going to castle on the kings side, you write 0-0. If you are going to castle on the queens side you write 0-0-0.
