The village and the beach of Nea Styra on the island of Evia in Greece |
In the south of the west coast of the island of Evia lies the seaside resort Nea Styra with some beautiful sandy beaches and a nice (partially) car-free promenade with hotels, shops and restaurants. There are also some bars and night clubs. The village looks out over the sea and the small islet of Styra with a small chapel. During the summer season there are excursions to this small island. From Nea Styra ferries leave for the town of Agia Marina on the mainland. Nea Styra is a cozy village, which extends along the coastline. It is a popular destination for the people of Athens who come here to relax. The distance to the capital of the island, Chalkida, is 89 kilometers and the distance to Karystos (in the south) is 35 kilometers. At four kilometers away from Nea Styra is the village of Styra, with a large church, shops and a medical center. Nea Styra once started as a harbour for Styra but grew out to be an independent village. Around Styra you will find various "drakospita" or dragon houses. Four miles inland from Nea Styra lies the village of Styra, with a bakery, a kafenion and a large church (with one bell tower), the Genesse Teotokou church, in the village square. Opposite this church in the same square there is a smaller church. In the village there are several other shops and a doctor's post. Between Styra and Nea Styra is the ancient Styra (we did not notice any remains of it) which was already mentioned by Homer in the Ilias. On a hill above Styra at 450 meters altitude are the remains of the ancient acropolis Armenian. Especially the gate is well preserved. There are also remains of walls built with very large stones. Around 1300 AD a new fort was built in this place. There are two churches in the fort. The stone built Agios Nikolaos church stands on the top and dates from around 1800. The mountain is named after this church. The Church of the Holy Virgin Mary dates back to 1746 and is built on the ruins of an older church. |
THE DRAKOSPITA OR DRAGON HOUSES NEAR STRYRA ON THE ISLAND OF EVIA OR EUBOEA IN GREECE |
Just north and south of Styra you will find "Drakospita", or so-called dragon houses, that were built 4500 years ago. They are indicated by a sign along the side of the road. They are called dragon houses because of the large piled stones they were built with. The photos of the dragonospito above are made south of Styra. If you drive to Karystos via the main road, you first come through the old village of Kapsala, then pass a small church on your right hand side, and then a short distance you see the sign indicating the dragon house. In total there are about 25 dragospita (plural of dragonospito) on the island. They are made of slate stone and have a pyramidal roof. What they served for is not clear and there are several theories about it. They could be sanctuaries but also lookouts (because they are often in strategic places), or just shelters. |
