The village and the harbour of Marmari on the island of Evia in Greece
Marmari is a small village with a port located in the southwest of the island of Evia. There are a little over 1,000 inhabitants living in this village. The port of Marmari has a connection by ferry with mainland of Greece. Ferries from the port of Rafina (a town near Athens - 25 minutes drive from the airport and on a bus route from there) make the crossing to Evia a few times a day, usually in the morning and at the end of the afternoon. The journey from Rafina to Marmari takes about an hour. This makes Marmari a popular destination for weekend trippers from Athens.
Marmari is not large or spectacular. There are only a limited number of tavernas, some hotels, a bakery, an ATM machine and some small supermarkets. The harbor front is dominated by the fairly large Agios Georgios church, ferries and a large square with the statue of the unknown sailor. It did not feel touristy in the village itself when we were there half of May, but this will most likely be different during the summer months. In the center of the village of Marmari there is not much of a beach. For this you have to the south (within walking distance, but driving is also possible). The beach is narrow and there are some trees that provide shade. Also on the north side are a few small beaches and two big sandy beaches, all within walking distance. Opposite Marmari are nine small islets, called the Petali islets. The largest one is called Megalonisos. In the summer months there are excursion boats visiting these islands.

The Agios Georgios church in Marmari on the island of Evia in Greece
The large white painted Agios Georgios church of Marmari with its bell tower stands on the quay in the village. Inside there are beautiful murals that cover the entire ceiling and large sections of the walls. The main painting is of the Holy Virgin Mary with child with an angel on either side. Very large chandeliers are hanging from the ceiling. In the gallery on the first floor (accessible by a staircase) are old religious paintings and icons depicting various saints and stories from the bible.
Zygos Taverna in Marmari
This taverna is located on the seafront near the part of the ferry port. We order a fish, a type of egg rolls with cheese, beet salad and tzatziki. The service is friendly, the white wine is good and we get a free a dish with big beans at our order. No complaints, everything tastes good and large portions are served. At the end we get a free desert of yoghurt with orange preserve.
Our verdict: very good, a 9 out of 10
