Menetes is a village that dates from the Middle Ages during the time that the Greek islands were exposed to pirate attacks. You drive through the village on the way from Pigadia in the east to Arkassa in the west of Karpathos, because the road runs through the village. The village is built in the shape of an amphitheatre against the hills. After Pigadia Menetes is the largest village on the island and has about 350 permanent residents. It is located approximately 8 kilometers from the capital at an altitude of 280 to 350 meters. There are a number of churches in and around the village of which the Kimisis tis Theotokou is the largest. It dates back to the 19th century and houses an old Maria icon that according to tradition can perform miracles. The older Agios Antonios church in Menetes still contains beautiful frescoes. Nearby is also the Byzantine Agios Mamas church.
In Menetes there are a number of beautiful large neo-classical houses that alternate with modern houses of a later construction. Just outside the village is an imposing war memorial to honor the local heroes of the Second World War. There are narrow streets and there is a local Folklore Museum. Many of the balconies in this colorful village contain pots of flowers.
