Afiartis is located in the southeast of the island of Karpathos about one kilometer away from the international airport. There are three bays with a beach in this area, which stretches for about five kilometers. They are the best known surfing locations of the island. In the southernmost bay, the one closest to the airport, there is the least wind. The beach gradually runs into the sea and the bottom is sandy. It is a good place for novice surfers. In the bay to the north there is more wind and this is suitable for the more advanced surfers. The wind is the most in the northerly bay. This bay is called "Vatha" or "Devils Bay" and sometimes European windsurfing competitions are held here.
