map Koumaradei, Samos Koumaradei is a mountainvillage in the south - center of the island of Samos, 7 kilometer west of Chora, on the main route from Chora to Pirgos. There are a couple of cute little churches with blue domes in the village, a lot of ceramic shops and herbs and honey is sold here. There are many old houses in Koumaradei. It is a very quiet village with birds and flowers. Many of the people in Koumaradei live from the agriculture or olive oil production. From the village you can make nice walks into the nature over special paths (there's a park). In the village is the exit to the 16th century monastery of Megali Panagia.

Koumeradei is located on a mountain slope and is a village like any other. However the village had a number of people with a vision. Konstantinos Kontaxis founded a factory here in the seventies to sell herbal plants. Farmers and shepherds from the area supplied by him with various herbs to make tea, such as thyme, oregano, sage, bay, mint and anise, and chamomile. In the factory the herbs were cleaned and then exported to Athens and abroad. This set a good example and other people followed packing and selling herbs: this is one of the reasons why so many people in the village sell herbs. Other people in the village made it their goal to preserve of old crafts and they created jobs to keep the young people in the village, and keep it from becoming a ghost village. For this reason and because of the relatively large amount of shops and a couple of tavernas the village still feels a bit lively. Yet you will see plenty of dilapidated houses in the village, because many of the youth ultimately prefer a job in a small town like Pythagorion or Vathi, or prefer life in a big city like Athens.
