The villages of Kallithea and Drakei on the island of Samos in Greece

map Kallithea, west Samos Kallithea and Drakei are two villages in the west of Samos, of which Kallithea is the most sleepy of the both. It is one of those villages where time stood still and tourists are rare. Kallithea is an old village with narrow streets where you find a few taverns and kafenions but otherwise there is not much to do here except enjoying the silence. On the village square of Kallitheo stands a tree that is over a 100 years old and there are a couple of churches in the village. Kallithea means "beautiful view" and the views are indeed beautiful, as are the views of the entire route of Limniónas / Paleochori to Drakei with pretty and impressive rock formations and forests of tall pine trees

map Drakei, west SamosDrakei has a little bit more life to it. Here the road stops and it is one of the starting points for people that want to visit the tropical-like beaches of Megalo and Micro Seitani. You need good walking shoes and about one and a half to two hours time. In Drakei there are a couple of taverna's, some accommodations and a nice church. The road to Kallithea and Drakei is a beautiful one that goes through the forests and with nice views over the sea, the mountains and the bays. In both Drakei and in Kallithea you can admire the sunset which is famous for its beauty. In between Kallithea and Drakei lie several beaches of which Valsamos Beach and Agios Issidoros Beach are the best (walk or have a 4-wheel drive).

The Kostas Taverna in Drakei (west of samos) was one of the best restaurants so far that we have visited on the island of Samos. It is situated close to the main church and you can take the stairs up to the platform where there is a wonderful view of the sea and the surroundings. Katerina is working there and she is a very friendly and helpful lady that speaks all her languages including German and English. It is a popular and busy place, which is understandable. Her husband Kostas is the cook (yeah sorry ladies, he is married). The zucchini-balls are wonderful and covered with a bit of parmezan cheese, the Greek salad has a bit of fresh thyme on it, the bread is home made and so is the olive oil. It's one of those places that you would like to put in your pocket and take with you (including the people that work here) and then eat the next meal there as well.

Our verdict: 8,5 out of 10
