The Hylarians

The Hylarians are a race which has evolved to a state of near perfection - although you couldn't tell it from their physical appearance.  Indeed, the predatory Hylarians confuse prey with their shambling, absurd semblance, combining needle-sharp teeth with flopping tentacles, wicked claws with a squat, armless torso and a calculating intellect with a stature of no more than a metre.

The Hylarians have achieved sentience only recently, perhaps in the last four hundred years, but have succeeded in colonising their entire solar system.   Every planet has at least begun the colonisation process, and literally hundreds of asteroid bases and listening posts have been built.  However, they have not yet discovered a method of travelling through hyperspace - which, considering their cold and calculated intelligence, is probably a good thing.
One last comment - do not be fooled by the Hylarians appearance!  Those useless-seeming tentacles are a hollow, boneless mass, their stringy muscles capable of exerting great pressure, and that squat torso can power a jump of more than six metres - from a stationary position.
