Kill the Lag!!

Lag driving you nuts to the point your ready to throw the computer thru the window or send death threats to Blizz about the quality of game play on bnet??? Your not alone. Well here's some info you may find useful. If not try the links further down, and if still no luck, well.... proceed with those threats to Blizzard :) hehehe

First, make sure your not running any extra programs when you get on Bnet. This includes ICQ. Hold down the 'CONTROL' and 'ALT' keys, hit the 'DELETE' key once to bring up the Close Program window. Then just end task on everything except Microsoft Explorer and Systray. This really does make a difference.

Here's some info from Blizz on Lag:

Make sure you're not using any extra internet applications when connected to battle.net (these could be hogging your bandwidth and increasing your latency).

Your latency (lag) to another computer on the internet can be affected by many things, including the speed of your internet connection, the speed of the computer to which you're gauging latency, and any internet traffic between the two of you. If trying to improve your latency to another, turning off other apps that might be slowing down your internet connection will certainly help, though if you connect to the internet at a time your ISP is not too busy, you'll probably notice your latency to others decrease as well.

Also note that the latency bars you see in the battle.net chat rooms tells you that person's latency to battle.net. This is a quick gauge of the speed of their connection, but lag you experience in a game of Starcraft over battle.net is actually caused by your latency to the other players in the game. Your latency to the other players in a game is shown as the colored bars next to their name in the pre-game chat screen (and the bars you see next to game names in the Join screen tells you your latency with respect to the game's creator). When choosing a game to play, take heed these bars, as they will directly affect the lag of the game.

You can also, while playing, change the network settings of the game to Extra High Latency, and this will smooth things out for you in a game with a lot of lag. To do this, hit F10 while in a game, select Options, select Network, select "extra high latency" then click OK.

Pat N.

Reducing Lag and How to Use the Network Settings Properly - Here's some useful info from Fraek that was posted at SCLegacy. Setting Lower Latency reduces the time between when you click the mouse and when a units responds to the click. Higher Latency increase that time, but smooths network performance for systems with slower or 'lossy' network connections. That is what is says in the Network Options in Starcraft. So if you are in a game, once the game starts up you don't need to set it right to Extra High! The reasons you may be waiting on the other player(s) is because they are still loading Starcraft. If after you have waited a little bit and it is lagged then you may want to switch it to High (not extra high yet). If it is still a bit laggy then switch it up to Extra High. Then, if it is STILL unbearable then you might think about just leaving. Don't forget the lag COULD be you... hope your games are less lagged.

Well I hope some of this helped you :) If not, please check out Blizzards Tech Support. If you absolutely can't stay connected to Battle.net you may have another issue besides lag.
