The Bad Guide
to the Greasy Spoon Cafes of Birmingham

MENU

Asteria's, 84 Bull Street, Birmingham

A cafe with three floors, and it's actually quite clean. One of our friend's mom now works here (she's the red head in photo) since the closure of Speedy Pizza. Whilst you wait in the long queues, you can watch the witresses scrape the chard bits off the cooker.

Not just a cafe, its a coffee lounge. The upstairs bit must be the coffee lounge because it seems a bit posher, having pots of plastic plants, and the tiny broken ends of Christmas decorations stuck on the ceiling with sellotape. If you were drunk or Oscar Wilde you'd look up and think they were stars. Smoking is obligatory by the way.

The menu here is truely huge, but much of that choice is made up of different baguettes and sandwiches and their fillings in different combinations. The sausage or breakfast baguettes are especially good and cheap, less than £2. Next door is a branch of Subway sandwiches, another of those rapidly expanding multinational fast food outlets. That Subway is always crowded and full of teenagers and pushchairs. If Birmingham had a trailer park, it would have this branch of Subway right in the middle, where the staff would be either called Kylie or Cletus.
