Match Report:

"SURELY HE CAN'T BE AN ENGLISHMAN!"

Day 1:
It's that time of year again, yes, the start of another cricket season! This year my team has dropped down from third division to fifth division due to a poor season last year and a loss of a few important players. This season we welcome a few new players, Martin from the land that invented the game: England, Luke who has come to us from the Parramatta competition and Sebastian, a mate of Kristian's but who isn't playing in this season opener. For our first match we are up against a team we have never heard of, the "Cavaliers". I discovered that they used to play in the Balmain competition and recently decided to move into our competition for a new challenge. So after socialising as a team who mostly hasn't seen each other since the last game of last season, back in March, our captain, Norm, tossed the coin with the Cavaliers captain to decide which team would bat or bowl. Norm won the toss and chose for our team to bowl.

Kristian opened the bowling for us with his left arm pace and began like he had left off last season, making it difficult for the opposing batsmen to score runs. Norm opened from the other end with his right arm swing and did likewise. Kristian capitalised on the good start and broke through for the first wicket with Martin taking a relatively straight forward catch at cover making the score: 1/9. Norm grabbed the next wicket soon after, bowling out the other Cavaliers opener to make it: 2/13. Our opposition put a bit of a partnership together until Kristian struck again: 3/41. Sam was brought on to bowl with his right arm medium pace and with great effect snared his first wicket of the season to make it: 4/63. Next it was Luke with his left arm off spin and he impressed his new team mates removing the Cavaliers best batsman, Langdon, for 41, who attempted a pull shot but was decieved by the low bounce off the pitch resulting in the ball crashing into his stumps: 5/81. From then on ACC took control, Martin showed that he's no slouch either in the field with a superb pick up and throw from cover to execute a run out making it: 6/86. The next Cavaliers batsmen panicked and attempted a suicide run to get off the mark giving Luke a simple run out: 7/86. What a great time to bring on the next bowler, Ray with his right arm legspin! He also experienced success with the Cavalier batsmen hitting the ball in the air in the direction of cover with Jack taking a one handed catch making it look oh so easy: 8/87, and Kristian was brought back on much to the Cavaliers dismay. Martin was in the action yet again with a late reaction catch at cover giving Kristian his third wicket and the Cavaliers had plummeted to: 9/91. A late flourish from the tail-enders, including giving Ray the unwanted honour of being hit for the first six of the season took the score over 100. Graham with his right arm slow was also given a bit of a belting until Norm brought their innings to an end with a LBW. So Cavaliers all out for 121 which included 6 sundries: (byes, leg byes, no balls and wides) with Langdon top scoring with 41. Kristian was the best of the ACC bowlers with figures of 3/26 and Norm the other multiple wicket taker with 2/29.

In the fading light, ACC had to face several overs until the close of play at 5:30pm. It was Ray and Maurice who would open the batting and try to survive the day. They did their job with Ray surviving a dropped catch at third slip. Together they took the score to: 0/20 with Ray on 16 and Maurice on four.

Day 2:
ACC continued their innings at 0/20 in pursuit of the Cavaliers score of 121. Maurice looked solid batting defensively protecting his wicket with Ray prepared to take more shots. He added ten to his score for the day including hitting two fours but was bowled out for 26 making the score: 1/38. Next in, the English import, Martin. After showing us last week what he can do in the field, Martin this time attacked the opposition with the bat in his hand, hitting glorious shots all over the park, including a pair of big sixes. At the other end, Maurice enjoyed the exhibition being put on but lost his wicket on 14 and ACC were: 2/67. Luke came in next and also displayed good techique as the rest of the ACC team expressed their delight to the prospect of having some batting strike power this season. Luke was caught and bowled out for 15 and the score was: 3/88. Thanks to Martin and his new partner Con, ACC cruised past the target score of 121 and continued on with Martin's performance eventually over on 65 giving us a healthy lead with the score on: 4/154. We continued on with Con bowled out on 34: 5/170, and Jeremy out for 11. This promped Norm to declare the innings leaving Jack not out on 11 and ACC with a final score of: 6dec/189, a lead of 68. There was plenty of time to try and secure second innings bonus points, with the batting team the chance to score a bonus point for every 75 runs scored and the bowling team to score a bonus point for every three wickets taken.

ACC made the perfect start with Kristian taking a caught and bowled with the third ball of the second innings at it was: 1/0. However, with the help of their captain Langdon, the Cavaliers were able to take their score over 75 securing a bonus point without the loss of anymore wickets and the match was over, a first innings victory for ACC!
