STEP TWO: LEDGER BOARD

A ledger board is the first step in the framing of your Deck. It's called a ledger because the floor joist layouts are marked on it depicting where the floor joist are to be attached.

One critical step that seems to be often skipped is lag bolting the ledger board to the house (see picture #2 above). This is important because the lag bolts carry not only most of the weight from your structure but all the weight that you put on it as well. Obviously you can't nail into brick but when attaching a ledger board to a house that isn't brick, relying solely on nails alone to hold the weight is going beyond what they are designed to do.

STEP 3: JOIST HANGERS

Once you have your framing built and in place the next step is installing joist hangers where ever your framing butts into each other perpendicularly, mostly used when there isn't a support from below such as a beam or a support post.
