Proper Deck Construction (continued)

STEP FOUR: SUPPORT POST

Step #4 is one of the very most important part of Deck Construction that is absent on almost every deck that we've seen in this area. Notice in picture #2 that the main support post is notched and the floor framing rests directly above it. This is what we call the "cantilever rule". Constructing anything structural or something that carries weight should have a beam or a post sitting directly under it.

We use 6x6's for our support post and notch it so that the floor framing sits on top and a part of the post runs past the framing and is attached from behind.

STEP FIVE: DOUBLE RIBBON JOIST

Notice in the photo to the left, the outer most framing around the floor framing has been doubled. We do this to allows for extra support for the railing post.

We attach the 4x4 railing post directly to the outer framing or Ribbon Joist of the floor framing after the decking boards are installed.
