Spiritual Living

Mind Renewal

Among other things, Christians are described as spiritual. Having been "born of the Spirit" (John 3:3-8) believers are able to continue their pilgrimage because of the illuminating and enabling power of the third person of the triune Godhead. Thus we read such injunctions as "walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16) and "be filled with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25).

But the Christian's walk is never to be thought of as merely abstract and theoretical. What is needed, rather, is a long-term commitment to following the ways of God. In order for this to consistently (and increasingly) take place, a number of principles must be heeded. These include a basic (biblical) knowledge base, sound thinking, proper motivation, and the real-life implementation of what God has said. In essence, believers are to live for God.

This portion of Truth & Things seeks to deal with the concepts and practical realities that contribute to Christian sanctification. The goal, of course, is to promote genuine Christian living.
A Christian is spiritual when he sees everything from God’s viewpoint. The ability to weigh all things in the divine scale and place the same value upon them as God does is the mark of a Spirit-filled life.
A. W. Tozer

Holiness is not an experience; it is the re-integration of our character, the rebuilding of a ruin. It is skilled labor, a long-term project, demanding everything God has given us for life and godliness.
Sinclair B. Ferguson

The reason our affections are so cold to heavenly things is because we do not warm them at the fire of holy meditation. As the musing on amorous objects makes the fire of lust burn and the musing on injuries makes the fire of revenge burn, so meditating on the transcendent beauties of Christ would make our love to Christ flame forth.
Thomas Watson

If you make doctrine the main thing, you are very likely to grow narrow-minded. If you make your own experience the main thing, you will become gloomy and critical of others. If you make ordinances the main thing, you will be apt to grow merely formal. But you can never make too much of the living Christ Jesus. Remember that all things else are for his sake. Doctrines and ordinances are the planets, but Christ is the sun. Get to love him best of all.
Charles H. Spurgeon

The great need of the hour among persons spiritually hungry is twofold: First, to know the Scriptures, apart from which no saving truth will be vouchsafed by our Lord; the second, to be enlightened by the Spirit, apart from whom the Scriptures will not be understood.
A. W. Tozer

The foundation of our love for the Lord lies in the recognition of His holiness, our sinfulness, and His grace.
Sinclair B. Ferguson

Lord, take off the veil; show me my heart. Let me not perish through mistake, or go to hell with hope of heaven
Thomas Watson
