Federal Work Study How to be a Volunteer Reader at one of 10 AVID Readers Locations Year 2000 Goals Met: One-to-one Reading with 509 Children 3,200 Books Given to Children and Families |
To promote a lifelong love of reading in the children of Tulsa by recruiting adult and youth volunteers to read books for one hour a week one-to-one with children in local child care centers.
· Monthly stipend of approximately $600 · Health insurance · Up to $300 in child care · Either an end-of-year education award of $4,725 or additional cash stipend of $1,200 AVID VISTA PositionsAmeriCorps*VISTA members with AVID coordinate adult and youth volunteers at area child care centers for approximately 20 hours a week. Ongoing duties include serving as a liaison between center staff and volunteers; working with teachers to select children for the program; recruiting, screening, training and supervising volunteers; ordering books and maintaining AVID’s on-site collection of books; creating volunteer retention activities, and maintaining a database of volunteers.
