R & R Racing 2006
Now that 2005 is over, we’re already looking forward to the 2006 racing season. I’ve put a spare short block together for the IMCA stock car. The engine we claimed last season in the Stock Car class has been apart and at the machine shop. I now have it back together and know what I need to be able to run it if need be. I've got a fresh engine tigether and in the factory stock. I also have some engines to freshen up and am trying to put some new body panels on the factory stock.
Except for some minor things, the stock car is almost ready to race.
In taking the engine out of the factory stock, I found that the frame where the motor mounts were welded was cracking on both sides. We plated the frame and welded up new motor mounts. We also spent a weekend building front and rear bumpers. Now, it’s a matter of hanging a body on the car, which I have absolutely NO experience at!!
Once again, we have tickets to go to the NASCAR weekend at Las Vegas. There are four of us going - Dave Harrison, Jeff Shew, my dad, and I. Dave made reservations at the Gold Coast in Las Vegas back in September. We’ll be driving out, leaving on Wednesday March 8th.
The highlight of the weekend will be an opportunity to participate in the Richard Petty Driving Experience. This was my Christmas present from Heather & Dana, Hollie & Ed and Abby & Joey. I got this huge box from them which hardly weighed anything. When I got it opened, at first all I saw was the brick duct-taped in the bottom. Then I saw an envelope taped to the side of the box. When I removed the envelope, the return address was the Richard Petty Driving Experience. I sure wish the kids could go, too, to see me drive!
Last season’s hectic schedule, hopefully, will slow down a bit. I’ve partnered with Jeff Shew in the IMCA stock car. We’ll be using his engine and Tyler Phelps is scheduled to drive for us. Tyler has raced and won in about everything that Beatrice has raced for the last 15 years. He also has a daughter that is racing motorcycles, so he won’t be racing week in and week out. On the weeks he doesn’t race, the stock car will stay at home.
We’ll be getting back from Las Vegas on March 14th, and “Test & Tune” for the Beatrice Spring Nationals will be on March 16th. The IMCA stock car portion of the program will be run on Saturday, March 18th. March 25th will be the WFR Car Show at the Gage County Fairgrounds in the morning and there will be a Test & Tune session at the Beatrice Speedway that afternoon. We’ll have a week off, and the regular season will start on Saturday, April 8th, 2006.
