Beatrice Speedway, Beatrice, NE 30 July 2005

Saturday was another hot night of racing at the Beatrice Speedway. The temperatures were a bit more pleasant than last week, but still hovering above 90 with a bit of a breeze.

The track rolled in fairly well, however, as the night wore on, it got a bit bumpy.

I'll apologize in advance; it's now late Sunday night and I leave first thing in the morning for Oklahoma City where I'll be attending a training conference. This will be a lot shorter than usual.

The R & R Racing/Blue Knights Monte Carlo factory stock was in the 3rd heat, starting on the inside of the 2nd row. With the 6R of Roy Armstrong, the 66 of Jeff Watts, the 15j of Jason Jensen and the 94j of Jeremy Jensen all in the field, I was just hoping to finish. It looked like a slim chance of making the invert.

The polesitter, the m34 of Matt Spanjer, was the first major hurdle. As a first year driver, the car is not very fast and he has a hard time keeping it straight. I was able to pass him on the bottom of the front chute, but the 66 had already shot into the lead. On the 2nd lap, the 6r had a flat right front tire, causing a yellow. When the green came back out, the 15j took the lead away from the 66 going into 3. I knew the 94j had to be close behind me, but never saw him come up to my door. At the checkers, the R & R Racing/Blue Knights Monte Carlo had a 3rd place finish in the heat. This would put us on the outside of the 3rd row in the A Feature.

The R & R Racing/Blue Knights Monte Carlo stock car started on the outside pole in the 2nd heat. We will not have the engine we claimed last week in the car for at least two more weeks, so we're still under powered. At the drop of the green, I held the bottom in order to keep from being run over. I was able to stay close to the pack for the first couple of laps, then they started to get away from me. I was also fighting the car as it wanted to come around on me in the corners. That is the first time all year it has given me any problems. Our 6th place finish put us on the outside of the 7th row in the stock car A Feature.

The R & R Racing/Blue Knights Monte Carlo factory stock got off to a rough start in the A Feature. Going into 1 on the 1st lap, I had to dodge the polesitter to keep from getting taken out as he drove to the top of the track, then back down again. The 66 took the early lead, but a lap 2 caution closed the field up again. At the drop of the green, I was hard onto 1, The wheel turned hard, giving me the impression that I had a flat tire. Another lap, and the yellow is out again. I'm really fighting the steering wheel, but now I'm thinking that I threw a power steering belt.

The track officials get the lineups and I'm waiting for them to tell me I have a flat. However, that does not happen and we're green once again.

With no power steering, I had to change my line on the track. If I didn't hit it just right, the car did not want to turn. The track was bumpy off the corners and I could feel every bump. The car was a real handful but when the checkers fell, we managed a 9th place finish.

On the track for the stock car feature, I was hoping to beat the 89 of Sam Howard into the first turn. However, he was able to stay under me and ahead of me through the corner and back down the chute. I could close on him at the end of the chute, but could not make the pass. The car was still loose, and on the 6th lap, I spun out in 3. I was able to keep the car running and shift down, but the field was coming back down the back chute. Before I could pull onto the track, the yellow came out and I was done for the night. Rules say if you are involved in a yellow by yourself, you are done for that race. A disappointment, but that's racing.

Here's hoping for a better night on Saturday August 6th! It's Kids Night and we're looking for a good turnout.
