Engine Co. 5 opened in 1960 at its current location. Engine 5's first due area is largely residential with many apartment buildings. Engine 5 also responds 1st due to numerous commercial structures

Engine Co. 5 protects Durham’s “West End”. Engine 5 covers part of Duke University as a first due unit and many second due runs on the campus.

For many years Engine 5 Co. has ranked right up with the busiest engines in the city. Engine 5 Co. has been the "West End’s Bravest" for over 40 years.
