Prologue

Prologue - Texas, 1875
Kevin crouched in the corner of his room. He was hugging his knees in the dark, as his eyes darted around the room. He wasn't sure what had happened to him yet, but something was different. He was very tired, yet he felt no pain. He could not explain the emotions that were brewing within.
Earlier that same day, Kevin decided to stop in a small town in Texas to rest for the night. He hadn't decided where his final destination was yet, but he was destined for the West Coast of the United States. He had taken all his belongings, money and a horse from the family ranch and left Pennsylvania. That was over a month and a half ago.
Kevin was dying for a home cooked meal and a small saloon looked like the best place.
He found a small table in one corner and ordered a large helping of beef and vegetable stew with some bread and he decided to treat himself to a mug of ale. His waitress was a real sweetheart and made no effort to try and hide the fact that she was flirting with him. "Is there a place around here where I can stay the night?" Kevin asked when the waitress come to clear his table.
"There is a hostel just a few doors down. Say, we close at eight, would you be interested in a little fun tonight?" she asked with a wink.
"I'd never turn away a pretty lady. Meet me at the hostel tonight around nine pm. So what's your name pretty lady?" Kevin asked.
"My name is Althea. I'll see you later tonight handsome." Althea replied.
Kevin thanked Althea and paid her before he left and made his way down to the hostel. The room wasn't anything special, but it would give him the opportunity to bathe and get a good night’s sleep. He thoroughly cleaned himself before he lay down for a much needed nap. Kevin awoke several hours later to someone unbuttoning his shirt. He immediately became aroused when he realized it was Althea. She was kneeling beside him, naked. It had been nearly two months since had been with a woman and her thin and petite frame aroused him. He nearly lost control when Althea removed his pants and caressed his now rock hard member.
"You're in for a surprise tonight, Baby." Althea said as she positioned herself between Kevin's legs and took his member in her mouth. Kevin fought to maintain control. Althea sensed when Kevin was close to the edge and removed him from her mouth. He begged her for some release and she loved it when they begged.
Her eyes focused on the pulsing vein, visible in his neck. Althea never took blood from her victims, she knew that her watcher would kill her for it unless she told Kevin that she was a vampire and he allowed her to take his blood, and he would never allow it. But she decided that it was worth the risk. She was a psychic vampire, she just fed off people's psychic power, and it was easiest to reach their psyche during sexual intercourse, or when they were in an extreme emotion of any kind.
She lowered herself down onto Kevin’s body and growled as he filled her. She slowly started to ride him and as usual she reached her climax first. It always took humans so much longer to reach the edge. She rode out her orgasm and decided to allow Kevin the same luxury before she fed on him. Several minutes later she felt him spill his seed deep inside her.
Pregnancy didn’t worry her in the least as all female vampires controlled when they ovulated, and so are well protected from the danger of bearing young. Not even that mattered much, as the egg of a female psychic vampire couldn’t come together with the sperm of a human male. A human egg could not unite with the sperm of a male psychic vampire. A bloodsucking vampire’s egg was very susceptible to impregnation by a human and it worked the other way too. Though a bloodsucker could not impregnate a psychic and it worked the other way too.
While he was still coming down from his high, she lowered her mouth to his neck. "You're a cute one. I want to keep you," Althea said aloud. At first she just gave him a few playful nips. A little known fact is that the fangs of vampires are hollow, and like a spider, which must bite its prey, they have the option of giving their victim a natural anesthetic, to make the victim immune to pain.
“Althea, stop that, my neck is very sore,” he said at the tiny, relatively gentle nips. Now Althea was desperate for him and as his neck was numb, she sank her fangs deep into his neck. She drank as much blood as she could without killing him. His close came around and his breathing became less labored. Kevin then looked up at Althea through wide eyes and jumped off the bed. He backed himself into a corner and started sobbing. She got dressed and laughed at the weak man sitting in the corner.
"Althea!" an angered female voice bellowed as the door to his room flew open. “Althea, you are dead now,” said the figure in the doorway. Then another woman came in. She was slim, and beautiful, as fair in skin and hair as Althea was dark, and Althea was very dark.
“Huuu,” Althea inhaled sharply as she saw the lady.
“You drank blood from an ignorant and unwilling victim, and now you will pay, with your life,” she said.
“If you don’t let me feed him he’ll die,” she said.
The other young lady threw her into a wall. What was odd was that the young lady, didn’t even touch Althea. She merely balled her fist and then quickly extended her arm towards the wall, releasing her fist. Althea was knocked unconscious, long enough for the other young lady to stab her heart, neck and wrists with a knife that she carried with her. Then she turned her attention to Kevin, who was still balled up on the floor sobbing.
“Now, Stranger, I will take care of you,” she said, but it wasn’t cruelly, it was kindly, and Kevin recognized this.
However, Althea crept along the floor, and tried to attack her. The young lady had some invisible shield around herself because Althea wasn’t able to move beyond a certain range of closeness to the young lady’s body. Kevin looked on as the young lady came towards him, he tried to get away, but he was too terribly weak, he could barely even stand. She sat down beside him and put her arm around his neck. The shield seemed to surround both of them, as soon as she had sat down, she held Kevin tightly against her body, blocking his view of Althea’s last moments. Althea couldn’t get past the shield the lady had set up around them.
Finally the blood ran from Althea’s body and she lay on the floor motionless.
Kevin was spared from seeing the bite and slash marks on her neck, chest, and wrists, and the blood instantly vanished. He was terrified when the strange woman brought his eyes to look upon her face, but she assured him, “Sit still, this won’t hurt you at all.” She touched the fang marks that Althea had left and his skin healed instantly all that were left were two tiny, raised, marks. The young lady took the knife she had and cut her wrist. She opened his mouth and ensured he drank enough blood. She had done this several times before, and she recognized the signs right away. Kevin's eyes flew open and he started to choke on the blood. Once she was sure that he had received enough blood, she took one of her fingers and slid it down her cut, and as she did the flesh sealed and healed up instantly. He was terrified now and tried with all of his might to stand up, but he was far too weak. “Sh, stay there, rest,” she said. She gave him his clothes and tenderly dressed him. “My servant will be here shortly.” Then a huge man came into the doorway then came over to them and helped the young lady up. She had taken the shield down from around them.
“Good work, Mistress,” he said when he saw Kevin.
She said, “I couldn’t stop it, I came too late.” Then she looked at the frightened, weak and confused Kevin. “Don’t fear us, Stranger, we mean you no harm. We are going to take you someplace safe,” she said as the man helped Kevin up and outside. They got into a lavish coach, which Kevin’s horse was tied to the side of. Once inside the strange woman looked sympathetically at him. “You poor, sweet thing, you’re terribly confused right now, aren’t you?” she asked. He nodded, and wished that he could lie down and get some sleep. She read his thoughts and brought a blanket out from under the seat of the coach and a pillow as well. “Here, now, you just lie down and get some rest. I’ll explain everything once we reach our destination,” she cooed gently. “By the way, what is your name?”
“Kevin,” he replied. “And yours?”
“My name is Reina,” she told him. “Now, close your eyes, sleep.”
They got onto a train and brought the horse with them as Reina figured he’d be very attached to it, and he was. He had raised the horse himself from a foal, when the foal’s mother had to be killed because the birth had been too hard on her. His father had promised him the baby when the mother first conceived. He loved the horse dearly and wouldn’t have been able to bear parting with him. They reached Florida and were met by another lavish coach that Kevin was again put on, he had remained asleep the whole while. Finally the coach pulled up to a huge house, it had been a plantation house, and the farm was still functioning, but psychic vampires worked it now.
Reina was the original psychic vampire; she was the oldest one of their race. A bloodsucking vampire had made love to a female oracle; the child she bore became a psychic vampire. It took her 100 years to gain one human year; she had been born in 125 B.C. Although, she could choose to look as old or young as she liked she liked looking twenty, and healthy, and beautiful.
Whenever a vampire fed off of a human being’s psyche the person was very weak for several days, and usually had a mild to moderate fever. If a vampire fed off of another psychic vampire, then the vampire who had been fed off of would be severely weakened and therefore could be destroyed with great ease.
Reina couldn’t be weakened by anything at all, well, there was one thing, but it wasn’t a great concern to her. Whenever any vampire, either bloodsucking, or psychic, was killed or destroyed by other vampires or a human who actually got wise to what they were then their spirit, strength and power came to Reina. Besides that, her spirit and strength were everlasting, so the last thing any vampire wanted to do was irk her.
One by one the bloodsucking vampires had been killed off. Most of the killings had been committed by the psychic vampires and almost all by Reina herself. There was only one left on earth, that was the one whom had been born with her, her brother. He had killed off their father, to gain control of the crystal of everlasting life and power. Her father knew that he was old, and knew that his son was strong and would kill his sister, so her father had given Reina the crystal, and that was the only reason that her brother was able to kill their father. She was just as powerful as her father had been. Her brother wanted her dead, and the crystal for himself, but he would never be able to manage that unless he got the crystal, and he had no idea where she kept it. If anyone other than Reina was in control of the crystal then anyone could destroy her. With the crystal she never needed to feed off of anyone, but if she ever lost the crystal, then she would be drained of all of her energy, as she hadn’t fed.
When they got to the house, Reina levitated Kevin, who was still sleeping, and brought him inside the house in this manner. She settled him down in a bed in warn and comfortable room. He slept for three days solid, and when he woke, he was told everything. He hated it, but he was grateful to Reina for saving his life. But he hated Althea for putting him in this position.
There were so many things running through his mind. He knew how fortunate he was that Althea was dead, and that Reina had pitied him enough to save him. He would have been extremely happy, if he were only human. He was sure he would never make a good vampire. He didn’t like the idea of feeding off of people mentally to stay alive. He was thankful that he wasn’t a blood vampire, because he knew he would be dead. He absolutely refused to take someone’s blood, because of the way he had been brought into this world and it he was grateful that there was a code of conduct that a vampire had to adhere to.
He was terribly weak and so Reina taught him how to feed off of the psyches of others. When he refused to feed, she gently got into his head with her own powers and made him feed off of her. He grew stronger under her care and guidance, however, he still didn’t like being a vampire.
He left the lavish comforts of Reina’s house once he had recovered fully and had completed his initial training. Reina knew he would never be able to survive on his own, he had no will to do so. Therefore his watcher kept an especially close eye on him. His watcher, was named Tereth, he reported back to Reina everyday with an update on Kevin’s condition. If he became terribly weak, then Reina sent him as much of her psyche as he needed to survive. Since he hadn’t honed his mental skills as of yet he didn’t know how he got strength when he needed it, all he knew was that he did
