Northern Kentucky Teens travel to Belize, Central America
(June 2005)

In June 2005, 42 Northern Kentucky high school teens from Bishop Brossart, Holy Cross and Newport Catholic Central set off to Belize, Central America for seven days to improve the living conditions of one of the poorest villages, Cicero.   These local teens worked the fall and spring fundraisers to cover the cost of the trip as well as collected funds as a direct donation to be use for building supplies.  Prior to the trip each teen was given their choice of the work crew that best suited their talents. The work crews consisted of painting, carpentry, stucco, teaching in the school, and cooking (hospitality).  Beyond bringing a personal suitcase for the work week, each student pack an addition suitcase filled with items to donate to the Belize community (clothes, shoes, school supplies and even some American non-perishables to share).  In addition, the teens brought along a "gift" for the families in Narsico (a village close by) who opened their homes to house the youth as well as their chaperones.

Several teams comprised of teenagers were immediately put to work upon their arrival in Belize, Central America. A group of teens focused on the doors/shutters and wood frame work in the 6 newly constructed 10x12 family homes, while other teen teams focused on exterior stucco/painting efforts on the homes. Beyond home construction efforts, several teens put their athletic talents and/or artistic talents to work with a focus on community improvement. One community project resulted in the construction of a basketball court with instructional lesson provided on the game.  Both girls and boys from the local grade school were anxious to get out and play. Another community improvement project was the "four seasons" painting of the exterior library walls, while the inside captured images of the alphabet.

Overall the accomplishments were numerous and the teens returned to the States with more than memories. Not only did they return with a greater sense of appreciation for their own blessings, but also they knew in their hearts they made a difference.
