Today’s rainy weather reduced most of the fields with natural grass into muddy quagmires and to use the lingo of horse racing you need to be a good “mudder” to play in ankle deep mud.  West Carter proved to fit the bill tonight as they defeated Walton-Verona by the score of 43-6.  West Carter recorded 16 first downs and 412 yards of total offense.  The Comets were penalized five times for 40 yards.  Walton-Verona recorded seven first downs and 148 yards of total offense.  They were penalized six times for 65 yards and lost a fumble.

Leetavious Cline led the West Carter ground attack with 180 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.  Orry Perry completed six of seven passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns.  Jackson Bond caught five passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns.  Gavin Gibson led the defense with 12 assisted tackles.  Dylan Roe added one solo and nine assisted tackles.  Isaac Bond recorded two solo and four assisted tackles.

Jonathan Freeman led Walton-Verona’s ground game with 25 yards on 11 carries.  Trey Hatmaker completed four of 12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.  Trey Ferguson caught four passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Paintsville High School
Paintsville, KY

Paintsville defeated Hazard 39-7 in a game that was played after a steady rain most of the day and the players were slogging through mud up to the ankles in some locations.  Since Paintsville lost QB Jake Hyden to a knee injury Paintsville has turned the offense over to a strong offensive line and a capable stable of running backs.  Paints totally shut down the Hazard offense, blocked two punts and scored six touchdowns on the ground.  Paintsville recorded 19 first downs and 340 yards of total offense.  The Tigers were penalized eight times for 80 yards.  Hazard recorded four first downs and 58 yards of total offense.  The Bulldogs were penalized four times for 20 yards and lost three fumbles.

Harris Phelps led Paintsville’s ground game with 120 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.  Karsten Poe carried the ball 12 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  Luke Hayden added 91 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.  Karsten Poe completed three of six passes for 21 yards.  Harris Phelps caught one pass for eight yards.  Luke Hayden led the defense with four solo and six assisted tackles.  Mason Lovely added one solo and five assisted tackles.  John Blackburn recorded four solo and one assisted tackles.  Matthew Davis and Nathan Marsillett each blocked a punt.

Max Johnson led Hazard’s ground game with 51 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.  Garrett Miller completed four of 12 passes for 17 yards.  Andrew Ford caught two passes for 10 yards.  Ryan Dean led the defense with seven solo and six assisted tackles.  Cameron Caudill added six solo and six assisted tackles.  Ryan Davidson recorded four solo and six assisted tackles.

Frederick Douglass adhered to the old adage “survive and advance” as they defeated Southwestern by the score of 21-20.  This game was played on a natural grass field and with the weather conditions turned into a mud pit.  Frederick Douglass took a 21-6 in the third quarter but Southwestern rallied and pulled within one; 21-20 with 51 seconds left on the clock on a 4 yard run by Connor Crisp.  The Warriors chose to go for the win but Obadiah Commodore got penetration and Romarion Warner and Caden Johnson were able to stop Connor Crisp short on the run attempt.  Frederick Douglass recorded 15 first downs and 327 yards of total offense.  The Broncos were penalized six times for 65 yards and had a pass intercepted.  Southwestern recorded 16 first downs and 257 yards of total offense.  The Warriors were penalized twice for 10 yards and lost two fumbles.

Darius Neal led Douglass’ ground game with 118 yards on 19 carries.  Cameron Dunn carried the ball three times for 53 yards and a touchdown.  Sam Cornett completed nine of 16 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  Dane Key caught four passes for 59 yards.  Isaiah Allen caught one pass for 52 yards and a touchdown.  Dekel Crowdus recorded two receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Tanner Wright led Southwestern’s ground game with 71 yards on 17 carries.  Connor Crisp carried the ball nine times for 60 yards and two touchdowns.  Christian Walden added 33 yards and a touchdown on three carries.  Chanler Gilbert completed five of nine passes for 79 yards.  Kaden Hewitt caught two passes for 56 yards.  Ian Ware returned four kickoffs for 103 yards.  Maison Hibbard intercepted a pass.

Paul Laurence Dunbar defeated Bryan Station by the score of 21-16.  Thus was a game in which it was a shame that either team had to lose.  Coaches Phillip Hawkins of Bryan Station and Wes Johnson of Paul Laurence Dunbar have literally resurrected two programs that had definitely fallen on hard times over the past several years.  Bryan Station caught a bad break early as starting QB Mikaleb Coffey suffered an injury in the second quarter and could not return to the game.  Dunbar got a super performance from speedster Howard Jackson who caught three long touchdown passes from Jake Smith and a ball hawking defense that intercepted two passes.  Dunbar recorded 12 first downs and 290 yards of total offense.  The Bulldogs were penalized four times for 35 yards and lost a fumble.  Bryan Station recorded 13 first downs and 342 yards of total offense.  The Defenders were penalized six times for 64 yards and had two passes intercepted.

Kamarion Robinson led Dunbar’s ground game with 85 yards on 25 carries.  Jake Smith completed seven of 13 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns.  Howard Jackson caught three passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns.  Mason Hayslett led the defense with six solo and six assisted tackles with 1.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling two yards.  Andrew Jones added four solo and two assisted tackles.  Josiah Brown recorded two solo and four assisted tackles.  Shyhiem Drew and Frank Illunga each intercepted a pass.

Joseph Bond led Bryan Station’s ground attack with 84 yards on 13 carries.  Mikaleb Coffey carried the ball four times for 68 yards and a touchdown.  Terik Mulder completed  14 of 27 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.  Mikaleb Coffey completed four of five passes for 20 yards.  AhTraivon Jenkins caught six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.  Carl Mundford added five receptions for 43 yards.  Damin Green recorded five receptions for 43 yards.  AhTraivon Jenkins returned two punts for 20 yards and two kickoffs for 47 yards.  Amodeus Taylor returned two kickoffs for 61 yards with a long return of 43 yards.  Jason Hocker led the defense with seven solo and one assisted tackles.  Yedide Yah Sledge added six solo and two assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 13 yards.  Antonio Davis recorded five solo and three assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a nine yard loss.  AhTraivon Jenkins chipped in with five solo and two assisted tackles.  Giovanni Watson added four solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling seven yards.

Breathitt County put together a complete game tonight in a 41-19 victory over Leslie County.  Breathitt County had to answer some questions tonight even to themselves.  The Bobcats had put up big numbers on offense but Leslie County’s defense could poise a challenge.  Also, Breathitt County’s defense was suspect against the run as they gave up 558 yards on the ground against Pike County Central in their only loss of the year.  They turned to their jack-of-all trades Lane Weddle who excelled on both offense and defense.  Despite injuries to their linebacker corps their front seven held Leslie County in check all night.  Breathitt County recorded 20 first downs and 413 yards of total offense.  The Bobcats were penalized six times for 54 yards, lost a fumble, and had a pass intercepted.  Leslie County recorded 18 first downs and 355 yards of total offense.  They were penalized eight times for 61 yards, lost two fumbles, and had one pass intercepted.

Lane Weddle led Breathitt County’s ground game with 222 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.  Jaylen Turner carried the ball 14 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns.  Jaylen Turner completed nine of 16 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown with one interception.  Bryce Hopkins caught two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.  Austin Sperry added five receptions for 31 yards.  Lane Weddle caught two passes for 26 yards.  Darren Noble led the defense with six solo and two assisted tackles.  Tyler Bryant added five solo and two assisted tackles.  Lance Weddle recorded three solo and one assisted tackles and intercepted a pass he returned for 21 yards and also recovered a fumble.

Brannon Stubblefield led Leslie County’s ground game with 84 yards.  Trent Asher carried the ball 10 times for 71 yards.  Zack Parker completed 11 of 26 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  Trent Asher caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.  Dalton Baker added two receptions for 41 yards.  Wyatt Ostrander added a six yard touchdown reception.  Cody Adams and Bryce Pugh each recovered a fumble and Wyatt Ostrander intercepted a pass.
