Pulaski County vs. South Laurel

South Laurel High School
London, KY

© 2016 by Ron Harrison

When is a win not a win?  South Laurel’s Conner Wilson kicked a 20 yard field goal on the final play of the game to give South Laurel an apparent 30-28 upset victory over Pulaski County.  Not so fast – the officials ruled an illegal procedure penalty against South Laurel and moved the Cardinals back five yards.  Wilson attempted this field goal from 25 yards and this time it failed and Pulaski County escaped with a 28-27 victory.  It was a night of heartbreaks for South Laurel as midway through the third quarter South Laurel had a first and goal from the Pulaski County one yard line.  The Cardinals were turned away three times on runs and went for the score on fourth down and Jake New recovered a fumble to stop the drive.  Pulaski took advantage and scored on a touchdown pass from Wiley Cain to Jake New to make the score 20-14.  It was a short-lived celebration for the Maroons as Jared Grubb returned the kickoff 71 yards for the touchdown and the kick gave South Laurel a 21-20 lead.  Pulaski County recaptured the lead and held a 28-21 advantage entering the final quarter.  Jared Grubb scored on a four yard run to cut the deficit to one point 28-27 but misfired on the two point conversion pass and it was intercepted.  This set the stage for the last second drama and Pulaski County escaped with the victory which improved their record to 7-1

Jake New led the Pulaski County ground game with 53 yards on four carries.  Wiley Cain completed 15 of 27 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns.  Matt Hendricks caught two passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.  Jake Johnson added eight receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown.  Jake Sloan added four receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.  Jake New caught a 16 yard touchdown reception.  Jake New led the defense with 11 solo and three assisted tackles.  Jaxon Morgan added eight solo and four assisted tackles.  Rickey Maxey recorded six solo and four assisted tackles.

Matt Harp led South Laurel’s ground game with 141 yards on 24 carries.  Jared Grubb carried the ball 27 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns.  Jared Grubb completed 14 of 19 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown.  Matthew Dalton caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.  Ace Allen and Jerred Lovins each caught four passes for 32 yards.  Jared Grubb also scored on a 71 yard kickoff return.  Jerred Lovins led the defense with eight solo and two assisted tackles.  William Lanior added five solo and four assisted tackles.  Jacob Christensen recorded six solo and three assisted tackles.
