HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE LANE!

RONNIE LANE DOCUMENTARY IN THE WORKS!!!!!!!!

For those of you who have not heard the rumours, yes it is true! The Ronnie Lane documentary which is going by its working title "The Passing Show" has actually begun filming and is making great progress. Rupert Williams who has been researching the project for the past four years has begun to take the film to the next step and so far the results have been very promising. Here are some more details:

The Film will encompass the entire life of Ronnie Lane from the early days with the Outcasts to the Texas years, etc.

A major issue has been the funding which has been difficult because of the expensive archival footage necessary to accompany the film.

More footage of the great Lane continues to turn up (Yeah!) (Faces, interviews, etc.) There is even some unreleased music that has been uncovered and fortunately is in the hands of the right people.

There is a website address which has just started www.passingshow.com that will hopefully soon include transcriptions from interviews, stills, clips and archived photos.

The following people have already undergone filmed interviews:
-Stan Lane
-Charlie Hart
-Steve Simpson
(The day ended with Charlie and Steve playing 'The Poacher,' completely unrehearsed and without having seen each other in 10 years!)
Also interviewed were:
-Kevin Westlake
-Bruce Rowlands
-Captain Peter Hill (Passing Show)
-Russell Schlagbaum

-It appears as though the filmmakers are trying to concentrate on the people who knew Ronnie very well rather than on the big stars that did not necessarily play a big role in his life. However, there will be opportunity for those big names at an upcoming tribute concert (which might actually happen this time!) Being a big fan of Ronnie's and a fan of Documentary film, I couldn't be happier to hear that they are approaching it this way.

Starting next year the following people are scheduled to be interviewed:
-Glyn Johns
-Benny Gallager and Graham Lyle
-Billy Nicholls
-Barbara Maurice (Russ' ex and Ronnie old secretary)
-Ron Chimes
-Eric Clapton
-Henry McCullough
-Pete Townshend
-Ronnie Wood
-Kenney Jones
-Boo Oldfield
-Alun Davis
-Every surviving member of Slim Chance has been contacted and quite a few more of them are likely to be involved in one way or another
-Still waiting for replies from:
-Jimmy Page
-Rod Stewart
-People that are trying to contacted:
-Roy Harper
-Ian Stewart's Widow Cynthia
-Bill Wyman

-They willl be shooting at various locations in Richmond including Ronnie's old flat, the Wick and Wick Cottage,Willoughby House and by and on the river again. They will also be filming various addresses in East London (Romford Road, Ronnie's school, the British Prince etc.), Westmoreland Terrace in Pimlico, Monks Corner in Marlow. Then they will be going to Wales to film at the Fishpool, the Miners Arms, Drum and Monkey etc.

-The following will all be filmed when they'll be in Texas/U.S
-Ian McLagan
-Alejando Escovedo
-Bucks Burnette
-Jody Denberg
-Rich Brotherton
-Sarah Brown
-Don Harvey
-Ronnie Johnstone
-Joe Ely
-more possibly

-All of the woman in Ronnie's life have or will be contacted and all will have an opportunity to be interviewed if they choose.

-Fortunately, the altruistic crew that has been working on this film has been treated exceptionally well and the response from everybody that they have been contacting has been extraordinary and very encouraging to the filmmakers.

-WHAT GREAT NEWS TO REPORT AT THE END OF THE YEAR!

Some are there but if you have submitted something and would like it on the site just re-submit and I'll get it up as soon as possible.

25 April, 2003:

This months Mojo reports that Hank Ballard, lead singer of the Midnighters has died. Ballard recorded the original version of the great "Annie Had a Baby" back in 1954 which Ronnie went on to cover during his famous Rockpalast show. Like Ronnie they obviously liked the name Annie as it was a follow up to Ballard's million seller "Work with me Annie".

Hank is also widely regarded as the uncredited originator of the Twist. He was born in Detroit in 1936 and died on March the 2nd of this year.
If you want to hear the Midnighters version click on this link (once there click on the record)

MAC/BILLY BRAGG UPDATE:

I was very lucky to catch Mac and Billy Bragg perform the other night at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. Mac and Billy played a heart warming version of Debris that would have brought a smile to Ronnie's face. After the show, Mac told me that shortly before this tour they had been performing Glad and Sorry. The show was superb with Mac completely on. It was quite a special feeling to actually meet a Small Face and close friend of Plonk's. The Faces box set is reportedly finished with the exception the original version of Ooh La La (sung by Ronnie Lane) missing. Nobody is able to locate it as of yet. If you have any information that may help in obtaining the original Ooh La La please email Mac at mac@macspages.com

If you get a chance, definitely go see Mac and Billy perform while you can. It is a powerful, entertaining, and politically charged show (Billy is super political, if you are not a liberal please be forwarned) For upcoming shows, visit Mac's site for further details:

KATE LANE IN HOUSEFIRE

Sad news today as Kate Lane, the former wife of Ronnie, was in a terrible house fire. She suffered severe burns and shock but she is now reovering and should be okay. The house which at one time her and Ronnie used to live in together, was completely burned to the ground. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kate and her family.

Henry McCullough (Rockpalast band) has released a new CD called "Prospector". It contains what I've been told is a beautiful rendiiton of "Kuschty Rye". Also "Done this One Before," by Ocean Colour Scene and "Spiritual Babe" by Joe Ely.

June 27, 2002:

RIP JOHN ENTWISTLE
May the Ox rest in peace. Thank you for all those years of virtuoso bass guitar playing. John will be sadly missed. Too many people are joining Ronnie and Steve... Slow down guys..... We need you here as long as possible.

2 years ago for Halloween, I searched for a skeleton suit similar to the one Entwistle wore during the Isle Of Wight Festival. I found one and went dressed as the Ox. Unfortunately, I did not have anyone join in on the fun and go as Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, or Keith Moon. When asks by others what I was dressed as, I said "John Entwistle." Nobody really got it, but it didn't really matter to me.

A framed John Entwistle artwork poster from the 2000 US Who tour hangs proudly in my bedroom for the last 2 years. John, we will miss you very much.

DAVE McENERY DIES
'Red River' Dave McEnery died the15th of January at age 87. He was known as the
fastest songwriter in the west. He once wrote 52 songs in 12 hours while
chained to a piano. He was born ' within a rifle shot of the Alomo' in San
Antonio, Texas.

He's significant to Ronnie because he is the writer of the classic ' Amelia
Earthart's last flight' one of his favourites (Rupe's guess is that Ronnie heard
it via his dad Stanley's record collection as a kid). There is a write up of this story in this month's issue of Mojo Magazine. Thanks to the great Rupert William for relaying the story.

I WILL BE AWAY....
I will be out of town for the next 3 1/2 weeks. So, unfortunately do not expect any updates to the website during this time. I will reply to any emails and make updates as soon as I get back. Hope everyone's summer gets off to a good start!

PLONK LEAVES FACES:

Well, it many be old news but here are two short articles from 1973 back when it actually happened. Plonk Quits Faces and Lane: It's Time for me to Move on
Thanks to the very generous Roland Schmitt for supplying me with the articles. More articles to come in the nearby future.

TRIBUTE CONCERT UPDATE:

I don't have one, but if you do please send it in (email) As soon as I get enough information, I will start a section on the April 1 tribute. I hope that everyone that is appearing will perform Ronnie Lane songs. The ARMS concerts were great but I think a tribute show calls for artists to perform songs penned by Plonk. Do you have a dream set list? Send it in and I'll post it when I get the tribute page up on the site. Pete Townshend "Heart to Hang Onto," (or really any song from Rough Mix), Eric Clapton "Barcelona," Ron Wood "Ooh La La," ..... Ah, the list goes on.... Personally, I would love to see Keith Richards and Bill Wyman show up. I think Keith would do a number of Lane songs well.

POLLS:

Hopefully everybody is having fun with the new poll question. I also changed two of the options on favorite song. Feel free to vote for any question as many times as you like and if you don't see an option you like, you can always add a comment in the box below.

GEORGE HARRISON:

George, I don't know what to say. Hang in there. We're all praying for you.

"For you who it always seems blue
It all comes, it never rains
But it pours,
Still it only takes time...
' Till love comes to everyone.

George Harrison, (Love Comes To Everyone)

WTC & Pentagon Tragedy
I express my deep regret and sorrow for family and friends of the victims that died on 11, September, 2001. Hopefully, they are in a better place. I am still in a state of shock as I am sure many of you are. I hope to get to some updates very soon but as many of you know it has been a difficult time for everybody.

August 30, 2001:

New chords and lyrics:
Courtesy of Paul Balm, the chords to the Done this One Before (one of the 2 songs on the B side of How Come) are now available. Thanks Paul! Thank you Dave McNarie for assisting me. This song is only available now on the singles compilation Kuschty Rye or How Come. If you do not have either of them, I would recommend the Kuschty Rye disc because the booklet and liner notes are far superior. Also, I added the lyrics for What Went Down that Night with You. This song is also available on the previously mentioned discs above as well as on the BBC sessions discs. Done this One Before was also performed at the BBC although it never made it onto the 2 CD set. Those of us who have seen this performance on video know how fortunate we are.

August 25, 2001:

Lots of updates!

Confirmed by John Hellier, The MS society are planning a Ronnie gig at the Royal Albert Hall on April

Complete Mojo Article up:
The September 1997 Mojo magazine article entitled "It's all too Beautiful," by Wayne Pernu is now view able in it's entirety (both pictures and article). Click here. It is well worth the read and it is loaded with great pictures. Currently, I have it on one page for your convenience so some of the pictures may take a while to download. If you are experiencing any problems just let me know. Once again, thanks to Lee Wallace for sharing the magazine with us all.

Cover Songs:
A good comprehensive list of cover songs and tribute songs of/to Ronnie Lane are available via this link. Thanks to Roland Schmitt for his great work.

Recordings done at the LMS (Ronnie Lane Mobile Studio)
You may have seen it on the back of the One for the Road album... As many of you may already know, it was not only used by Ronnie to record. Here is a list of others who used it to record. Thanks once again to Roland Schmitt for enlightening us with his knowledge.

Future Updates:
I have a pile of articles and excerpts to add soon as well as some more lyrics. Hope to update more often. Please keep the suggestions going and don't forget to sign the guest book!

August 15, 2001:

Also corrected the lyrics of Anniversary to read you've already got the gold, got the gold. This sent in by Sir Rupert Williams. Thanks as always!

More lyrics and chords to follow. Plus news articles, and hopefully I will get the Mojo article with pictures shortly.

August 11, 2001:

I'm back but things are still crazy at the moment, please be patient; I will have updates shortly. I have loads of stuff to add to the site. Lyrics, chords, articles, interviews. While I was in Germany, I visited Roland Schmitt, co-author of Happy Boys Happy, where I learned much and received valuable articles that would probably be of a high interest to visitors of this site. Look for some updates really soon.....

July 18, 2001:

Many updates to come in the near future... However, I am leaving today for Germany for my first vacation in five years and my first time ever out of the states, so unfortunately, I will not be able to update the site at all until I return. I have been contacted by people who are going to try and contribute some lyrics and chords to the site. So look forward to that shortly.

Another big update to occur: The 1997 Mojo Magazine tribute to Ronnie has just fallen into my hands thanks to Lee "Rock & Roll Star in his own right, and my main source for John Entwistle skeleton suit information," Wallace. It features many pictures I have never seen before as well as the longest article I've ever seen on him.

Although, I will be gone for a little while, you can still send me e-mail's, questions or submit information. I will be happy to respond or make further additions to the website shortly after my arrival back in the states.
Everybody be good!

Thank's to everybody for some very nice feedback! It really does mean a lot.
Many people have written mentioning that they are having difficulty reading the red text on the black background. I'm going to try and experiment the next few days and hopefully make the text easier to see and read. I've already made some changes...

I'm sure many of you have noticed numerous errors in the lyrics section. I tried my best and figured I'd put what I could figure out on the site and people could just send me the corrections.

Already some updates!
Added lyrics and notes for "Anniversary," "32st.," "One for the Road," and corrected lyrics for "Don't you Cry for me." (All courtesy of Peter Shields) Thanks Peter!
