Exclusive Myst III: Exile Interview
Presto’s Francis Tsai talks
Myst III and gives us a peek at the art of
Exile
When Cyan's Myst came on the scene in 1993 it was an instant
hit, becoming a cultural icon in a culture that wasn't quite sure
what a computer game was. Myst and Riven: The Sequel
to Myst have since sold almost 10 million copies. While Cyan
is hard at work on a 3D adaptation of the original game, they tapped
well-known adventure designers Presto Studios to build on their
legacy with Myst III: Exile. Myst III continues the
saga of Atrus and Catherine with a new engine, a new villain and
five new Ages. We spoke with Myst III designer Francis Tsai
about what it's like to work on the most famous computer game in
the world.
Myst is the biggest series to ever hit computer games
and has a huge, dedicated fan base. Is it daunting to step into
Cyan's shoes to build on the worlds they created?
It is a bit daunting, but only in the sense that we have a good
idea of the responsibility we have in giving the story and characters
the treatment that they deserve. The reaction we have had so far
from the established fan base has been very encouraging. In particular,
feedback from the Rivenguild site has been positive
and helpful as well. The hardcore fans have analyzed the screenshots
and concept art and come up with countless theories regarding storyline,
puzzles and characters -- it's been very insightful.
