Pisaura Wolf Spider

Among the spiders of the family Pisauridae, the male offers a wedding present to the female prior to mating.  This gift is a fly or other insect enveloped in silk. The male then does his little dance to identify himself as a mate. The female will signal him back to let him know if his gift is acceptable or not. The purpose of the males behavior is to inhibit the female from her instinctive desire to capture and eat him. In studying the species, experts have noted that if no insects are available, the male offers his mate inert objects, such as small shavings of wood rolled up in a little silk package. When the female discovers that she has been tricked, and the nicely wrapped package does not contain food, she is likely to attack the male.
