The Hostess Cake Bakery

Jul. 25, 2001 - After 72 years of making Twinkies, Ding Dongs and other cakes, pies and doughnuts, the Hostess Cake bakery on Oakman Boulevard will turn off its ovens, costing 233 jobs.
The plant, opened in 1929, is scheduled to close Sept. 23.
Kansas City, Mo.-based Interstate Bakeries Corp., which owns Hostess, had been considering closing the Detroit bakery for a few years because the plant is outdated, said Mark Dirkes, senior vice president of marketing for IBC...
